The Wisconsin man, who allegedly faked his own death before turning up alive and well overseas, returned to U.S. soil where sheriff's deputies booked him into jail, authorities said Wednesday. Ryan Borgwardt arrived in the United States on Tuesday and was taken to the Green Lake County Jail on unspecified charges, Sheriff Mark Podoll told reporters. Borgwardt is accused of staging his Aug. 12 disappearance while kayaking on Green Lake, about 100 miles northwest of Milwaukee. When Borgwardt didn't come home on that day, searchers found a capsized kayak and his vehicle and trailer parked in Dodge Memorial County Park. After international call for help to find Borgwardt, a Russian-speaking woman reached out to Green Lake County Sheriff's deputies and helped them contact the wayward father, authorities said.

A Wisconsin man is alive and well and likely in Uzbekistan after faking his own death in a staged kayaking accident — and is now in talks with officials hoping to bring him home to his family, authorities said Thursday. CNN —Ryan Borgwardt, a Wisconsin kayaker accused of faking his own drowning and fleeing the country, is alive somewhere in Eastern Europe and has been talking to investigators, officials said. “Great news: we know that he’s alive and well,” Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Matthew L. Vande Kolk said Thursday. Borgwardt told investigators that he thought they would stop searching for him after about two weeks, officials said. He chose Green Lake, in part, because it is the deepest natural lake in Wisconsin. The FBI, Department of Homeland Security and the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations are assisting investigators, Vande Kolk said.

Ryan Borgwardt — a married father of two — went missing on Aug. 12 and his last known location was Green Lake, Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll said during a news briefing Friday. Deputies found a capsized kayak in the lake and Borgwardt's vehicle and trailer parked in Dodge Memorial County Park, Podoll said. "Due to these discoveries of the new evidence, we were sure that Ryan was not in our lake," Podoll said. Podoll said the investigation into Borgwardt's disappearance still has a lot of missing pieces, including a motive, and where he is right now.
