The recall last week of two Bay Area officials who both championed progressive crime policies reflects long-held frustrations around a previous increase in violence targeting the Asian American community, experts say. The vote is indicative of Asian Americans’ rightward shift toward tougher crime policies like much of the state, analysts say. From March 2020 to December 2021, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country reported nearly 11,000 hate incidents, including verbal and physical abuse, being coughed at or spat on, and facing discrimination in the workplace. “And a lot of people say, ‘Oh, we’ve moved on from that era.’ I don’t think Asian Americans have,” said James Zarsadiaz, author of “Resisting Change in Suburbia,” whose research focuses on Asian American conservatism. In San Francisco, for example, officials received 60 reports of hate crimes against Asian Americans in 2021, compared with the nine in 2020.

Crews were "working aggressively to fully extinguish" the blaze in Oakland Hills, named the Keller Fire, the Oakland Fire Department said in an update on X early Saturday morning. Wind carried flames into a grove of Eucalyptus trees, where it has grown to 15 acres, NBC Bay Area reported. Oakland fire said two homes have been impacted by flames. Evacuation orders were initially issued for Campus Drive and Crystal Ridge Court, NBC Bay Area reported, before it expanded to surrounding areas. Sims told NBC Bay Area that her husband was inside their home when the landscape caught on fire and caused a front window to explode.

The city’s last remaining major league sports team announced in April that it would leave town after 57 seasons. All of which served to drive signatures for a recall election against Mayor Sheng Thao only 18 months into her tenure — a rare ouster attempt in a city this large. Then, two days after the recall qualified for the ballot last week, F.B.I. agents raided the home of Ms. Thao and stayed there for hours.
