New York CNN —OpenAI is worried that people might start to rely on ChatGPT too much for companionship, potentially leading to “dependence,” because of its new human-sounding voice mode. ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode sounds remarkably lifelike. Now, OpenAI is apparently concerned that fictional story is a little too close to becoming reality, after it says it observed users talking to ChatGPT’s voice mode in language “expressing shared bonds” with the tool. Some people are already forming what they describe as romantic relationships with AI chatbots, prompting concern from relationship experts. For now, OpenAI says it’s committed to building AI “safely,” and plans to continue studying the potential for “emotional reliance” by users on its tools.

A day earlier Hamas aired a video showing the three hostages and promising to disclose their fate. Hamas said on Monday that two of the hostages captured on Oct. 7 had been killed in Israeli airstrikes and released images that appeared to show their bodies, but the Israeli military cast doubt on the claim. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, chief spokesman for the Israeli military, said at a press briefing that at least one of the hostages was not killed by its forces. At the same time, the videos appeared to demonstrate the leverage which Hamas can exert on Israeli society through the hostages. Previous videos released by Hamas about the hostages have omitted or distorted crucial details. She said that Hamas fighters dug her and Mr. Svirsky out but that Mr. Sharabi had been killed.

China called for a large-scale and authoritative peace conference on the war in Gaza, while the militant group Hamas aired video of three Israeli hostages and said their fate would be disclosed on Monday. Hamas aired video on Sunday showing three Israeli hostages it is holding in Gaza and urged the Israeli government to stop the offensive against the Palestinian Islamist group and bring about their release. Of some 240 people seized by Hamas in a cross-border killing spree that sparked the war, around half were released in a November truce. Israel says 132 remain in Gaza and that 25 of them have died in captivity. The Gaza health ministry has said almost 24,000 people have been killed in the Israeli offensive that followed with more than 60,000 wounded.

Families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza awoke on Wednesday to news of a deal that brought both hope and agony. Israel has said that about 240 people were taken hostage to Gaza, and it remained unclear which of them would be released under the cease-fire deal announced overnight. Hours after the deal was announced, families said they had received no official information from the Israeli authorities. At least 36 Israeli civilians ages 18 and under are being held in Gaza along with 13 of their mothers.
