According to the Maui Economic Development Board, around 70% of every dollar in Maui County is generated, either directly or indirectly, by the tourism industry. Tourism numbers from June 2024 show that nearly a year on, visit numbers had yet to return to their pre-fire levels. Tourists are still encouraged to act responsibly when they visit Maui, and there are opportunities to donate or help out with Lahaina recovery efforts. Shank said the Four Seasons is also encouraging tourists to actively get out and support the island during their visit.

CNN —Tiger Woods shot a one-over-par 72 on his return to competitive PGA Tour action on Thursday at the Genesis Invitational, but finished his round with a huge shank to blot his outing. However, Woods admitted afterwards that he was dealing with back spasms for the final three holes of his round, something which helped to contribute to the shank on the 18th hole. Woods hits from a bunker on the 10th hole during the first round of the Genesis Invitational. Woods is chasing his first PGA Tour win since his record-equaling 82nd triumph at the Zozo Championship in October 2019. Woods has said he is aiming to play in one tournament a month this year.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tiger Woods returned to the PGA Tour and lasted only 24 holes, withdrawing Friday at the Genesis Invitational after hitting his tee shot on the seventh hole. PGA Tour rules official Mark Dusbabek said on the telecast that Woods had an illness, and that it was not related to his ankle or back. Wood was 1-over par for the round and projected just outside the cut when he asked for a cart and was driven off the course by a rules official. Woods had not played an official event since the Masters last April, withdrawing in the middle of the third round of the rain-delayed major. Woods had said he hoped to play one tournament a month through the major season.

Woods said his back began to spasm over the final few holes in the Genesis Invitational at Riviera. The shot called for the same club he had just shanked — 8-iron — for a low punch between the trees. “I had a small window there and tried to hit a punch-hook 8-iron after I just shanked an 8-iron," he said. Woods managed five birdies on a pristine day at Riviera, with mostly sunshine and a strong breeze late in the afternoon. A shank is rare, especially for Woods, but it has been a while since he mentioned back spasms.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Thousands of fans watching Tiger Woods in his 2024 debut missed out on the best golf Thursday at the Genesis Invitational. In the group ahead of Woods was Patrick Cantlay, looking as though he wants to be the next Southern California native to win at Riviera. Cantlay opened with three birdies in four holes and never really slowed until a sycamore tree halted his great run. “Jordan and I were a bunch under on the front nine and a day where I putted really, really well. That shank was a shocker, and perhaps more concerning was Woods saying his back was acting up int the final hour, leading to the shank.

Companies in this basket could include Coterra, Devon Energy (DVN) and Diamondback Energy (FANG). Dealmaking in the U.S. oil and gas patch has picked up pace as producers sought to replenish their inventory after years of under-investment. The most-prized targets for Chevron could be Coterra Energy (CTRA.N) or Devon Energy (DVN.N), he added. Others mentioned included Matador Resources (MTDR.N), Permian Resources (PR.N) and Diamondback Energy (FANG.O). Still, the Exxon deal, the industry's largest since 2016, also set off worries about stiff regulatory scrutiny over anti-competitive concerns. MONTEREY, Calif. (AP) — Felix Rosenqvist will end his tenure with Arrow McLaren Racing by starting from the pole in the IndyCar Series season finale at Laguna Seca. Rosenqvist won the only two poles of the season for McLaren, which is still seeking its first win of the season from its three-driver lineup headed into Sunday's finale. Rosenqvist announced earlier this week that he's moving to Meyer Shank Racing next season; McLaren said David Malukas will replace him next year. In the end, Palou decided last month he wasn't going to McLaren at all, too late for the team to retain Rosenqvist. Ericsson, who is in his fourth season with Ganassi, won the Indianapolis 500 last year and had been lobbying since for a better contract.

Companies Diamondback Energy Inc FollowMay 1 (Reuters) - Shale producer Diamondback Energy Inc (FANG.O) reported first-quarter profit below Wall Street estimates on Monday, hurt by lower prices of crude, sending its shares down 2%. Global crude prices averaged $82 a barrel in the January-March quarter, down nearly 16% from a year earlier as concerns about global economic outlook weighed on prices. The Midland, Texas-based firm said total average unhedged realized prices were $49.72 per barrel of oil equivalent in the reported quarter, 29% lower from a year earlier. Diamondback also said there were signs that inflation, which plagued the industry in recent quarters, is showing signs of abating. Stice added that raw materials and service costs are declining and he expects his company's completion costs to be lower.
Top producers have built a war chest to fund acquisitions after reaping windfall profit in 2022 from skyrocketing oil prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. At least three analysts have identified Diamondback Energy Inc (FANG.O), Matador Resources Inc (MTDR.N) and Permian Resources Corp (PR.N) as possible takeout targets. The shale patch, which lies between Texas and New Mexico, has the necessary infrastructure and is known for high productivity and large undeveloped reserves. But a surge in oil prices last year helped turn the tide. Last week, ConocoPhillips (COP.N) CEO Ryan Lance said he was expecting more shale deals, adding that "consolidation needs to happen" among Permian Basin energy producers.
Pioneer Natural jumps on report of buyout talks with Exxon

April 10 (Reuters) - Pioneer Natural Resources Co's (PXD.N) shares rose as much as 8.5% on Monday following a report that Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) held preliminary talks with the U.S. shale oil producer about a possible acquisition. Shares of Pioneer were up 6.5% at $221.74, while Exxon Mobil inched up 0.2% to $115.25. Pioneer is the third-largest oil producer after Chevron Corp (CVX.N) and ConocoPhillips (COP.N) in the Permian basin, the biggest in the United States. Analysts believe Pioneer and other exploration and production companies could be acquired in the coming quarters given oil giants such as Exxon are looking to boost inventory. "Would not be surprised to see Exxon step up for PXD's scale and inventory depth in the Midland Basin, but the price tag will ultimately be based on the oil prices underwritten by Exxon.

Deer Disease Threatens Herds Across the Country

Chronic wasting disease arises from pathogens that lead to brain damage in deer, elk and moose. During Missouri’s rifle-hunting season, state conservation officials in more than two dozen locations spend 12 hours a day removing and testing lymph nodes from the heads of deer carcasses brought in by hunters. They are looking for chronic wasting disease, a deadly and incurable condition on the rise across the country. “It’s a growing problem,” said Erin Shank, a biologist at the Missouri Department of Conservation. “It’s going one direction and it’s not the direction we want it to go.”

On a desolate and windswept corner of Qatar’s northeastern coast, among the sand dunes of the barren desert, lies Al Jassasiya, the Gulf country’s largest and most important rock art site. Overall, archaeologists have found a total of some 900 rock carvings, or “petroglyphs,” at Al Jassasiya. Al Jassasiya, about an hour north of Qatar’s uber-modern capital and near the old pearling port of Al Huwaila, was discovered in 1957. “We have no direct clues about the motifs used in Al Jassasiya,” he said. Al Jassasiya is located just south of the popular Azerbaijani Beach, so an excursion there can also be combined with a relaxing day beside the sea.
