Julia Rothman andJune 1, 2024Just after 5 a.m. on a recent Friday, Bendix Diner, a small, family-run business, began frying up eggs on the griddle to make the first of dozens of dishes it would serve to a steadily rotating cast of regulars. From daybreak through lunch, 46 customers ate over 87 eggs and 36 strips of bacon, and drank gallons of coffee. On top of everything she had to do when he died, like planning the funeral, there was also the stress of finances and paperwork. “We had a joint checking account, but it didn’t have a lot of money. Our other bank account had more money, but was only in his name. I had to get that sorted out, which took ages.”The most helpful advice my mom got when my dad died? Some things felt slightly off, but I wrote back. The response was surprising: The person knew some things about hiring an illustrator, using industry terminology and making other requests typical of art directors. At this point, I was almost certain it was a scam. And then the most glaring red flag: The person wanted to pay me immediately. As a freelancer, I almost always collect payment once a project is completed.

Julia Rothman andJuly 19, 2023ImageThere’s good news for recent college graduates: The labor market is strong, unemployment is low and, according to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, businesses are expecting to hire almost 4 percent more graduates from the class of 2023 than they did from the previous class. The bad news? For most of them, all four years of college were tainted by a global pandemic, and now they have to transition from student life to the world of work. Which is never easy. We interviewed 17 graduates from different majors and parts of the country about how they’re feeling as they enter the work force.
