The hundreds of mysterious New Jersey drone sightings are sparking mounting demands for a more forceful federal response, calls that come as even more sightings are being reported in New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Overnight, 79 sightings were reported across New Jersey alone, a senior official briefed on the drone sightings told NBC News. An ongoing investigation leads officials to believe previously reported New Jersey sightings over the Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County and Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster were indeed drones, a senior official briefed on the drone sightings told NBC News. “The feds can’t control the air space, and yesterday my phone didn’t stop with drone sightings messages,” he said. “These are drones, unmanned aerial systems that have been used as weapons of war around the globe.”

Researchers first spotted the insect, dubbed the “ManhattAnt,” while doing a survey on ants in New York City in 2011. By comparing the New York ants with the European ones, Seifert was able to confirm the ant’s identity. Because the nests work together instead of against one another, they can spread faster and easily dominate an area by outcompeting native species, he added. “One of the things we know about a lot of invasive ant species is they displace the native species, and the native species that they’re displacing usually have very specialized roles in the ecosystem, so you’re sort of disrupting that ecosystem when these species get introduced,” Moreau said. Time will tell whether the ant has become more than just a nuisance and is disrupting the ecosystem, Penick said.

After seven weeks of trial, federal prosecutors rested their case on Friday against Senator Robert Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat accused of conspiring to take hundreds of thousands of dollars in gold, cash and other bribes in return for the senator’s willingness to dispense political favors at home and abroad. Defense lawyers are expected to begin calling witnesses next week in Federal District Court in Manhattan. Throughout the trial, lawyers for Mr. Menendez, who has vigorously maintained his innocence, have aggressively cross-examined a parade of government witnesses, seeking to undermine their credibility. “The government hasn’t proven its case,” Mr. Menendez said as he left the courthouse on Friday. The conclusion of the government’s case comes nine months after Mr. Menendez, his wife and several New Jersey businessmen were first charged with participating in a vast bribery conspiracy that prosecutors say began in 2018.

Menendez is not running for reelection in next month’s Democratic primary but has said he would consider an independent bid should he be exonerated. “Evidence will show Nadine’s family had a lot of gold,” Weitzman said, asserting that she did not discuss money with the senator and kept financial problems she had from him. Weitzman also said the gold bars were found in Nadine’s locked closet, which the senator didn’t have access to. The potential jurors – an array of New Yorkers, including pastors, a standup comedian and amateur musicians – were pressed on whether they could be unbiased and fairly consider testimony from law enforcement officers or convicted criminals. One potential juror spoke about being a “news junkie” who couldn’t sit on the trial because “I’ve learned about the case significantly.

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., attends a news conference outside the U.S. Capitol to call for the reversal of the Biden administrations Title 42 expansion and proposed asylum transit ban on Thursday, January 26, 2023. Indicted Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., is considering running for re-election in November as an independent, two sources who spoke with him directly tell NBC News. He is now making calls to allies about his record and career and is preparing to collect petitions to run in November as an independent, the sources said. But running as an independent would give him more time; in that case, he would need only 800 signatures by June 4 to qualify for the ballot. Several New Jersey Democrats have already filed to run for Menendez's seat, including Rep. Andy Kim and the state's first lady, Tammy Murphy.

New Yorkers have long asserted their rights over cars on the city’s streets, identifying with Dustin Hoffman in “Midnight Cowboy” who barks, “I’m walkin’ here!” at a cab that nearly hits him as he tries to cross the street. Recent changes in street width, curb size, crosswalks, bike lanes and speed limits that were made as part of the city’s adoption of Vision Zero in 2014, a program intended to eliminate traffic deaths, are a natural extension of this pedestrian-first mind-set. The street life of the suburbs, however, is built around a landscape that was designed from the beginning to give automobiles priority. In Connecticut, highway entrance ramps dating back more than half a century may be contributing to an alarming increase of head-on collisions. And while several New Jersey communities seem eager to align with Vision Zero, the state Legislature remains hostile to implementing traffic enforcement technology.
