'Unacceptable'"Extraordinarily prejudicial," Trump's lawyers called the film in defense filings made public this week. There is also their client to consider, Trump's lawyers said, in the delay request made public Thursday. Apple TV+ is a small but influential player in the streaming wars. And Apple has signaled it wants to grow its streaming content slate at a time when other media companies are contracting. Apple is "always looking" for films that "highlight humanity," according to one of the agency documents. As a side hustle of a massive retail business, Apple TV+ can fly under the radar, insulated from economic pressures that have roiled the entertainment business. (Apple TV+ was the first streamer to win the best picture Oscar, in 2022, for "CODA," which it acquired at the Sundance Film Festival).

CNN —Lauren Miller Rogen revealed this week that she had surgery to treat a brain aneurysm. Miller Rogen, married to actor and producer Seth Rogen, shared her experience during a speech at the UCLA Department of Neurosurgery Visionary Ball in Los Angeles on Wednesday, according to People. So of course, this was terrifying information, and made me think of my great-grandmother, whose fate I certainly didn’t want to mimic.”Initially, Miller Rogen said, the aneurysm “remained small.” She later underwent surgery at UCLA to address it when doctors noticed last year that it had grown in size. “I’m truly endlessly grateful to Dr. Colby, his entire team, and the entire staff at UCLA who guided us through this scary experience that I’m truly grateful to have overcome,” Miller Rogen added. The performances of all four films – “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” “Saw X,” “The Creator” and “Dumb Money” – told a familiar story at the box office. “PAW Patrol,” from Paramount Pictures and Spin Master, had timing on its side. A third “PAW Patrol” movie has already been green-lit. Sony Pictures’ “Dumb Money,” expanded nationwide after two weeks of limited release but failed to ignite the kind of populist movement it irreverently dramatizes. Made for $30 million, “Dumb Money” wasn’t a massive bet.

I'm fascinated by Hollywood's interpretation of finance, from "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "Margin Call" to "The Big Short." The depiction of hedge fund managers Ken Griffin (Nick Offerman), Steve Cohen (Vincent D'Onofrio), and Gabe Plotkin (Seth Rogen), whose firm's GameStop short position put it in Reddit traders' crosshairs, came across as too over-the-top and cartoonish. But if satire was the direction the movie wanted — à la "The Wolf of Wall Street" — it should have pushed harder. Instead, Gill's stoner brother (Pete Davidson) has to carry the comedy load, but most of his jokes come up short.

There's Anthony Ramos' Marcus, a GameStop cashier, being lectured by his parents that this stock trading thing isn't real. Reddit versus Wall StreetMany social media traders discussed the meme stock moment in David vs Goliath terms — the retail traders versus the hedge funds. Several brokerages limited trading in meme stocks at the height of the meme stock mania. In the second quarter of 2019, before the meme stock mania began, the company generated about $1.3 billion in net sales. The AMC stock sales have diluted the holdings of individual shareholders, and the market cap of AMC is still down more than 50% from its peak.

TORONTO (AP) — Think of movies about the financial system and your mind is almost sure to go to Gordon Gekko and “Wall Street” or Leonardo DiCaprio’s gyrating Jordan Belfort in “The Wolf of Wall Street.”When Hollywood takes on Wall Street, it usually heads straight to the C-suite. In 2021, Gill’s enthusiastic endorsement of GameStop stock helped fuel a viral trading frenzy that rocked Wall Street and humbled the hedge funds that has shorted the brick-and-mortar video game company. Gillespie was able to follow the phenomenon thanks to his 24-year-old son, who had been involved with the subreddit Wall Street Bets. My son warned me: You got in too late.”Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, two former Wall Street Journal reporters turned screenwriters, came on to write the script. They feel small, they feel powerless, they feel that the system is rigged,” says Angelo.

[1/3] Director Craig Gillespie poses during the gala presentation of "Dumb Money" at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada September 8, 2023. Dumb Money captures the behind-the-scenes of one of the biggest Wall Street stories of COVID that hooked retail investors and created a mutiny by grabbing the attention of professional investors on social media. It chronicles the battle between institutional and retail investors when Reddit-inspired small traders rose up against Wall Street by buying shares of GameStop (GME.N) en masse, creating large losses for short sellers. With the tagline "Dear Wall Street ...," the movie is "very front and center" and is timely in discussing the topic of wealth disparity in America, Gillespie said. Teddy Schwarzman declined to comment on how his familial ties to Wall Street affected the production of "Dumb Money."

“Dumb Money” is the kind of midbudget, formula-busting, thinking-person’s movie that isn’t supposed to get made anymore, much less receive a wide, studio-backed release in theaters. It tells the bizarre true story of small investors — a nurse, college students, a YouTube personality known as Roaring Kitty — who created a Wall Street frenzy over the troubled video game retailer GameStop during the pandemic. Determined to teach professional investors a lesson, and hopefully get rich in the process, they pushed GameStop shares to a stratospheric level in early 2021, for a time putting the squeeze on sophisticated hedge funds that had bet that GameStop shares would fall. The $30 million film, directed by Craig Gillespie (“Cruella”), contains withering depictions of real-life Wall Street figures like Kenneth C. Griffin, the Citadel titan; Steven A. Cohen, the hedge fund manager and New York Mets owner; and Gabe Plotkin, whose hedge fund lost billions in the squeeze. In one colorful scene, Mr. Cohen, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, sits in a mansion snarfing a club sandwich and snorting with laughter on the phone with Mr. Plotkin, played by Seth Rogen.

It's been a tough go for investment bankers recently. As if all that wasn't bad enough for bankers, The Wall Street Journal recently reported that even lawyers are now making more money than them. It turns out the culprit, as is often the case on Wall Street, is inflation. It's getting really tough these days to make the case for getting into investment banking. That begs the question: Why bother getting into investment banking at all?

The social media-driven trading frenzy that pushed shares of GameStop sky high seemingly overnight captivated not just Wall Street, but the entire country. For many months now, I've been having conversations and writing about economic indicators that all point to a recession. The US is in the midst of a "freight recession," meaning there's fewer trucks delivering goods around the country. In a call last week, JB Hunt reported a bad earnings miss, and executives said a recovery for trucking looks uncertain. Outside the trucking sector, the classic recession indicators are blaring, too:The Conference Board's Leading Economic Index just dipped for the 12th consecutive month. The New York Fed's Recession Probabilities Model puts the odds of a downturn at 57%, the highest mark since 1982.
