“The Supreme Court has a limited role to play death penalty cases,” said Paul Cassell, a University of Utah law professor who is representing a victim’s family in another death penalty case before the high court this year. Another involves an Alabama man who claims he is intellectually disabled and therefore ineligible for execution under Supreme Court precedent. The Supreme Court’s approach to death penalty appeals is “to correct severe misapplications of constitutional law by America’s state court systems,” said Seth Kretzer, a Texas attorney who has represented death row inmates at the Supreme Court. Alphabet had been Baupost's second-biggest bet in the first quarter. At the end of the second quarter, Klarman's longtime holdings including John Malone's media conglomerate Liberty Global , Fidelity National Information Services and Just Eat Takeaway remained some of his top bets. Meanwhile, he picked up shares of health insurer Humana last quarter as well as a small stake in Capri Holdings , a merger arbitrage bet in the middle of a planned $8.5 billion acquisition by Tapestry .

Scientists are very confident that climate change is increasing rainfall rates – how hard the rain is falling – and the amount of rain a storm can produce. Floodwaters have washed out roads and several state road closures are in effect. A team was heading out to survey the damage, which included “quite a bit” of structural and road damage, National Weather Service meteorologist Seth Kutikoff told the Associated Press. Northeast Vermont and other portions of the state are also still recovering from more extensive flooding just over a year ago. Last year’s flooding caused numerous road and bridge washouts, land and mudslides resulting in significant property damage and loss.

Pershing Square also has a closed-end fund in Europe, which trades at a discount to its net asset value. Montaque cofounded Group Black in 2021 with the goal of directing $500 million in advertising money to Black-owned media in its first 18 months. With the pledge, Group Black laid out a plan to steer money to Black media owners and acquire media companies. Bough, Group Black's chief strategy officer, was a former Mondelēz and PepsiCo marketer who presented the CNBC reality show "Cleveland Hustles." Various outlets reported that Group Black mounted bids for media companies including the Sports Illustrated publisher Arena Group, the Paramount-owned BET, Vice Media, and Vox Media. Seven former employees described Montaque as an energetic leader but said he was ultimately ineffective in executing Group Black's mission.

Dear Tripped Up,Last September, my husband and I flew to New York City and headed to the Ridge Hotel on the Lower East Side to spend a few days before a cruise. Since the Ridge had “contactless check-in,” we had received two codes to get in the front entrance and our room. So we spent the night in the hotel’s breakfast room, where the restroom also required a code that we did not have. The next morning, the hotel staff sent an apologetic message with the right code, and promised us a refund for that night, about $215. But paying that much to sleep fitfully in the breakfast room with no access to a bathroom and (I’m guessing) no 24-hour waffle maker?

Here’s what led to the dismissal in the Baldwin case. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer presides over actor Alec Baldwin's trial on involuntary manslaughter in First Judicial District Court on July 12, 2024 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The items, however, were cataloged separately from Baldwin’s case, excluded from the “Rust” case inventory and not tested to see if they matched the lethal round, according to Poppell’s testimony. Attorney Luke Nikas embraces actor Alec Baldwin during his trial on involuntary manslaughter at Santa Fe County District Court in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on July 12, 2024. However, the technician testified the items were catalogued separately from Baldwin’s case and were not included in the “Rust” case inventory or tested to see if they matched the lethal round. Baldwin’s team argued prosecutors did not properly disclose this evidence to the defense and asked for the case to be dismissed. In response, prosecutor Kari Morrissey said investigators determined the ammunition was not a match to those found on the “Rust” set and had no evidentiary value to the case. The judge has ordered additional witnesses to testify before she renders a ruling on Baldwin’s motion to dismiss the case. At opening statements Wednesday, prosecutors alleged Baldwin was reckless with firearms on set and violated the “cardinal rules of firearm safety” with his actions.

Alec Baldwin 's involuntary manslaughter trial in New Mexico was put on hold Friday while the judge considers a defense motion to dismiss the case over disputed ammunition evidence. "We don't know if it's a live ammunition match or not," Baldwin's attorney Luke Nikas told the judge. The prosecution has said that the ammunition was not connected to the case and was not hidden. The issue came up Thursday on the second day of trial during defense questioning of sheriff's crime scene technician Marissa Poppell. "This is a wild goose chase that has no evidentiary value whatsoever," Morrissey told the judge Friday.

All in all, Group Black said it planned to deploy $500 million in Black-owned media by the end of 2022. Some brands have provided updates on their commitments since, but gains by Black-owned media companies have been uneven overall. Group Black's idea was to help steer ad dollars to its member companies and use some of the ad dollars to buy stakes in media companies. It listed among its founding member companies Essence, which is part of Dennis' company, Sundial Media; podcast company Pod Digital Media; and lifestyle media company She Media. Various outlets also reported that Group Black sought to acquire stakes in media companies including Sports Illustrated publisher Arena Group and Vox Media.

When China finally reopened to tourists in 2023, we got visas and booked a July flight to Beijing via Doha on Qatar Airways, paying about $1,400 total. The link on the Qatar Airways website was broken, but I confirmed online and with friends who had recently traveled to China that I could fill it out upon arrival. At the airport, Qatar Airways disagreed, and when I once again couldn’t get the form to work, we were denied boarding. Qatar Airways mostly refunded the tickets — we received $1,185 — but refused to admit it was wrong. In your situation, your itinerary had you going through Qatar Airways’ hub in Doha, meaning those behind you in line in Jordan were probably headed to dozens of countries, all with their own rules.

Dear Tripped Up,Last October, my extended family spent a week in Todos Santos, in Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, for a wedding. Nothing else unusual happened that day, and reviews on Google for this gas station contain eerily similar accusations of fraudulent charges from other tourists. I disputed the charge, but Wells Fargo repeatedly denied my claim, even when I asked the Better Business Bureau to intercede. Dear Nate,We cannot be sure the fraud occurred at the gas station, but if so, it’s a clever scam. Humor me while I consider the situation from the perspective of a bank like Wells Fargo.

Hedge funds took a diversified approach to technology investing in the first quarter as the sector built on its 2024 rally. Both Appaloosa and Coatue trimmed stakes in Nvidia during the period, with the latter shrinking his stake by 68% to $1.25 billion. Stanley Druckenmiller told CNBC last month that he cut his Nvidia stake in late March and called AI a "little overhyped" in the short run. Apple caught renewed attention from Viking Global and cuts from Coatue and Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway. Coatue, Third Point, Viking Global and Tiger Global upped their Amazon stakes, while Appaloosa and D1 Capital trimmed their holdings.

Dear Tripped Up,In September 2022, I booked a 17-day Arabian Sea cruise through Vantage Travel Services to celebrate my 80th birthday with my wife. I used my credit card to leave a $2,000 deposit and paid the remaining $17,905 shortly afterward by bank transfer. I also bought the Worldwide Trip Protector plan from Travel Insured International (for $1,954), in part because it covered financial default and bankruptcy of cruise lines. My credit card returned the $2,000, and I filed an insurance claim for $17,905. Baupost's Seth Klarman found a slew of buying opportunities in the first quarter, including a handful of artificial intelligence-linked stocks, according to a new regulatory filing. The noted hedge fund investor added a sizable stake in web recommendation platform Outbrain last quarter, building a bet worth more than $100 million and making it his ninth largest position. Klarman also took a small bet in Soundhound AI , a voice AI and speech recognition company. And just like Buffett, Klarman has increased his exposure to the tech sector in recent years to take advantage of its explosive growth. In this case, Klarman significantly increased exposure to the group after prices got a lot cheaper.
