CNN —Eight people were killed in the Serbian town of Novi Sad on Friday when the roof of a railway station collapsed, according to the country’s interior minister. Rescuers were at the scene of the accident within minutes of an emergency call being made, according to Dacic. APSerbia’s Prime Minister, Milos Vucevic, offered his condolences to families of victims affected by the incident, while thanking first responders. According to CNN affiliate N1, the railway station’s roof was renovated in 2021. More renovation work took place months later, and the building was officially reopened on July 5 this year.

Mohacs, Hungary/Prahovo, Serbia Reuters —The wrecks of explosives-laden Nazi ships sunk in the Danube River during World War II have emerged near Serbia’s river port town of Prahovo, after a drought in July and August that saw the river’s water level drop. The vessels revealed in Prahovo were among hundreds scuttled along the Danube by Nazi Germany’s Black Sea fleet in 1944 as they retreated from advancing Soviet forces, destroying the ships themselves. The wrecks can hamper river traffic during low water levels. During floods, the Danube rises well above 6 meters (19.7 feet). Long-awaited rainfall set in on Monday, which is expected to raise Danube levels to around 3 meters (9.8 feet) at Mohacs by the weekend, with the river likely to submerge the shipwrecks again.

Paris CNN —LeBron James made his emphatic return to Olympic basketball on Sunday, turning in a dominant performance in a 110-84 win against Serbia, his first contest at the Games since 2012. James’ 21 points, eight rebounds and nine assists helped provide the spark for Team USA throughout the contest. The first half though was all about Kevin Durant, who scored 21 points on 8-for-8 shooting. Edwards finished with 11 points and five rebounds. It appeared to be the turning point that put Team USA on its way to a blowout win after Serbia hung around for much of the first three quarters of the game.

☆ Serbia: Police officer shot with arrow in suspected terror attack at Israeli embassy in Serbia

CNN —A police officer at the Israeli Embassy in the Serbian capital Belgrade was shot in the neck with a crossbow in a suspected terror attack on Saturday, CNN affiliate N1 reported. The police officer shot the attacker who later died, according to N1. The officer has been taken to hospital and will need an operation to remove an arrow from his neck. Serbia’s Interior Minister Ivica Dacic called the incident a “terrorist attack,” saying several people believed to have been linked to the incident had been arrested. A spokesperson for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called the incident an “attempted terrorist attack” in a statement.

Chinese state media played up the warm diplomacy, with headlines proclaiming China’s “ironclad” bond with Serbia and “golden friendship” with Hungary. Both are sure to closely watch any summit between Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in China, expected to happen soon. BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union lawmakers called on Thursday for an independent investigation into allegations of vote-rigging in Serbia and demanded that EU funds be cut off if the authorities in Belgrade fail to cooperate with the inquiry or are found to be implicated in election irregularities. CNN —Kosovo police said Sunday that they have killed three armed attackers and arrested another amid an ongoing shootout in the village of Banjska in northern Kosovo.
