President-elect Donald Trump's tax proposals could cost trillions of dollars. The "phased rollout" of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid is on track for the upcoming academic year, the U.S. Department of Education says. So far, the 2025-26 FAFSA has been available to limited groups of students in a series of beta tests that began on Oct. 1. It will become available to all students and contributors on or before Dec. 1, the Education Department said. As of Oct. 29, the government's FAFSA Issues page lists 22 unresolved issues, down from 25 a few weeks ago, he said. "We've made a lot of progress resolving those issues and we are now seeing more students able to complete their form."

CNN —Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have laid out a broad array of ideas aimed at making life more affordable and strengthening the economy, which rank at the top of voters’ concerns. Both Trump and Harris have rolled out pricey provisions without specifying how they would cover the cost. Though his campaign hasn’t released details on the proposal, Trump has indicated that he would eliminate both federal income taxes and payroll taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare. Around half of beneficiaries – mainly those with higher incomes – pay federal income tax on their Social Security payments. Harris’ plan would also accelerate the speed of Medicare’s drug price negotiations so that the costs of more medications come down faster.

As President Joe Biden fought to remain in the presidential race this summer, advisers often argued there existed a “Biden coalition” — a cohort only the incumbent could hold together. A coalition of labor groups targeting union members in battleground states is pointing to Biden’s term in office. In the relatively affluent Milwaukee suburbs of Waukesha County, Wisconsin, Rochelle Gamauf said each week she is seeing new faces at her food pantry, Friends With Food, which she started during the pandemic. And on Thursday, Harris delivered an unscheduled speech focused on former Trump chief of staff John Kelly confirming Trump praised Adolf Hitler’s generals. The Harris campaign argues that the plan will tip some final undecided voters — a chunk of which are disaffected Republicans or independents. The Harris campaign says it is also focused on understanding what messaging could impact the small number of undecided voters that remain in key battleground states. “The two most motivating messages for Democratic turnout are those around abortion and democracy.”Some Harris campaign officials echoed that argument. Still, some Democrats who have worked with Harris worry there is too much focus on Trump and not on Harris’ unique skills and vision.
