TJX Companies seamlessly became the leading retailer in its off-price category through its operational acumen and tenured inventory management expertise. TJX could also benefit in 2025 in the event of trade tariffs from the incoming Trump administration. '24 look back TJX — the company behind T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods — has been a major standout in off-price retail in 2024. This strategy increased customer loyalty and drove repeat customers — allowing TJX to gain market share in the off-price retail channel and ultimately leading to strong comparable sales and a higher operating margin profile. Plus, if some retail categories are impacted by tariffs next year, TJX management said it will make prices proportionally lower, which should keep shoppers engaged.

Walmart has started giving store-level associates body cameras to wear as part of a pilot program at some of its U.S. locations, CNBC has learned. Walmart, the largest nongovernmental employer in the U.S., is testing the technology after smaller retailers started trying body cameras at their own stores as a way to deter theft. However, it's unclear whether body cameras actually help to deescalate conflict. Appelbaum, whose union does not represent Walmart employees but includes staff from retailers such as Macy's and H&M, said the RWDSU is concerned that body cameras are more about surveillance and deterring theft than making employees safer. She said body cameras could be part of the solution but cameras alone are "no substitute" for proper training.

The big-box retailer reversed course and cut its full-year profit guidance, just three months after hiking that forecast. That's lower than the $9 to $9.70 per share range that it shared in August and below the $9.55 a share expected by analysts, according to StreetAccount. That metric, which is also known as same-store sales, includes sales on its website and stores open at least 13 months. The company fell short of Wall Street's earnings per share estimate by 20%, its biggest miss in two years. Target eked out a comparable sales gain of 0.3%, as shoppers spent more on its website but less at its stores.

Food hoarding can vary depending on the access the person has to buying food, Daigle said. It is interesting to talk about food hoarding after the lockdowns of the Covid-19 pandemic, because food hoarding served a purpose in that time, Daigle said. Some people engaging in food hoarding behaviors may isolate out of shame or feel more comfortable being around food versus being out in public. Some eating disorders have food hoarding as part of their behaviors, and the same experience may drive people to cope with both hoarding and eating disorder behaviors, she said. But shortages of other things children need may also lead to food hoarding, Daigle said.

Dine Brands Global is considering an Applebee’s and IHOP combination, according to an earnings call on February 28. Dine Brands is the parent company of both restaurant chains. Because of the cost to build an Applebee’s, Dine Brands is “assembling a prototype” for another option. The revenue for the joint restaurants could double that of the standalone restaurants, the company said in the earnings call. Combination locations allowed these restaurants, such as Auntie Anne’s and Cinnabon, to expand past malls and into busier streetside spots.
