The authorities in New Caledonia, a semiautonomous French territory in the South Pacific, put a curfew in place on Tuesday and banned all public gatherings after protests against a proposed constitutional change turned violent overnight. France’s High Commission of the Republic in New Caledonia announced on Tuesday that a “massive mobilization” of security and defense forces has been sent to quell the protests. In addition, a curfew was imposed in the capital, Noumea, for Tuesday night, and all public gatherings were banned along with the sale of alcohol and the transportation of weapons, the High Commission said. The latest protests started on Monday, before a scheduled Tuesday vote in the French Parliament on a change to New Caledonia’s Constitution that would expand French citizens’ eligibility to vote in provincial elections. Some pro-independence activists in the territory fear the amendment would water down their movement.

CNN —Ukraine claimed it hit two Russian landing craft in occupied Crimea with sea drones in an overnight operation, the latest in a series of escalating strikes on the peninsula illegally annexed by Russia in 2014. “Two Russian assault boats have been hit with Ukrainian sea drones near Chernomorske, Crimea,” Andriy Yusov, a representative of Defense Intelligence of Ukraine (GUR), told CNN. The video appears to show two sea drones approaching targets that appear to be landing craft at a dock. The second drone appears to film the first one as it hits the landing craft. The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces intercepted three Ukrainian drones over Crimea in the early hours on Friday.

A group of senior Gabonese military officers appeared on national television in the early hours of Wednesday and said they had taken power, minutes after the state election body announced President Ali Bongo had won a third term. Appearing on television channel Gabon 24, the officers said they represented all security and defense forces in the Central African nation. Loud sounds of gunfire could be heard in the capital Libreville, a Reuters reporter said, after the television appearance. "In the name of the Gabonese people ... we have decided to defend the peace by putting an end to the current regime," the officers said. As one officer read the joint statement, around a dozen others stood silently behind him in military fatigues and berets.

Kyiv is slated to get several 30 mm gun trucks and mobile laser-guided rocket systems. These weapons are part of a new $2.6 billion security package announced by the Pentagon. Though the gun trucks are new, truck-mounted weaponry will not be a ground-breaking addition to Ukraine's arsenal of American weapon systems. Ukraine's military said in a daily update on Wednesday that Russian forces launched 17 Shahed-136 drones in an attack and that 14 of them were shot down by Kyiv's air defenses. The US official said that this week's new security package "includes important capabilities for air defense and to counter Russian unmanned aerial systems."
Ukraine starts producing shells for Soviet-era tanks

The ammunition was being made outside Ukraine with the co-operation of an unnamed NATO country, state-owned Ukroboronprom said. It said the shells had been made to fulfil an order from Ukraine's defence ministry. This creates an acute need for new sources of ammunition supply, as most NATO tanks use a different calibre -- while the vast majority of 125-mm round stocks are held by Russia and other countries who would not supply Ukraine. Ukroboronprom said this is the second type of munition which it had started to make in co-operation with a NATO member state. In February, it announced the start of joint production of 120-mm mortar rounds, again with an unnamed NATO partner.
