Ms. Cheatle joined the Secret Service in 1995 and spent more than two decades there before leaving in 2021 to lead the North American security operations for PepsiCo.
Ms. Cheatle, 53, is the second woman to lead the Secret Service.
By the time she had graduated from college four years later, Ms. Cheatle had applied for a job at the Secret Service, the newspaper said.
At the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, two Republican senators chastised Ms. Cheatle in a confrontation that was captured on video.
An internal Secret Service investigation of the shooting is underway, as are several inquiries in Congress.
