With the 2024 election nearing, questions arise about whether Trump will accept the results if he loses. That "always claim victory" rule came into play during the 2020 presidential election. “I think instinct is everything, and collaboration,” Stan said in a recent interview with CNN. CNN reported in May, around the time of the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, that Trump’s team was considering a lawsuit over the film’s release and distribution. “This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked,” Steven Cheung, a Trump campaign spokesperson, said in a statement to CNN at the time. In an interview with CNN, the film’s director Ali Abbasi questioned whether US audiences would ever get to see it. “So that became the red thread through the story, and we organized everything around it, and that was very helpful.”“The Apprentice” is now playing in theaters.

Trump’s re-election campaign has excoriated the project, calling it “pure malicious defamation” and “garbage,” and sent the producers a cease-and-desist letter. Vanity Fair journalist Gabriel Sherman, who wrote the screenplay, draws a direct line between Cohn’s bare-knuckle tactics and Trump’s modern-day political persona. In one graphic scene, the dramatized Trump character sexually assaults his first wife, Ivana Trump (played by Maria Bakalova), after a bitter argument. In another notable sequence, Trump’s character goes under the knife for scalp reduction surgery and a liposuction procedure. “You might find some of these character questions you have about Trump answered,” Abbasi said.

That's because of a twisty backstory involving gun-shy Hollywood studios, a fledgling producer, and his father-in-law: Dan Snyder, a billionaire Trump supporter who initially bankrolled the movie. Related storiesYou got a Trump supporter to fund this movie, which in no way is a movie a Trump supporter would want to see, let alone fund. And so indirectly, a Republican Trump donor's money was paying for the production of this movie. The nightmare scenario would be that we shoot this movie and then Dan Snyder hates the movie and somehow is able to block it. AdvertisementThis will sound pretty cavalier from me, but: It seems like if there's an "unseeable Trump movie" that is going to immediately make people demand to see it.

This week I finally got to see “The Apprentice,” an absorbing, disturbing movie about the relationship between the red-baiting mob lawyer Roy Cohn and a young Donald Trump. The “Succession” star Jeremy Strong captures both Cohn’s reptilian menace and, eventually, his pathos, as he’s wasted by AIDS but, closeted to the end, refuses to admit it. Just as impressive is Sebastian Stan, who makes Trump legible as a human being rather than the grotesque hyperobject we all know today. It’s not a sympathetic portrayal, exactly; this is, after all, a movie that depicts Trump raping his first wife, Ivana. I wish you could see it.

Read previewIn the 1970s, the lawyer Roy Cohn taught Donald Trump a simple playbook for political fights: attack, counterattack, and never apologize. Trump is employing that strategy on "The Apprentice," an independently produced biopic about him that premiered this week at the Cannes Film Festival. In a cease-and-desist letter, one of Trump's attorneys threatened to sue over the movie's release, calling it "direct foreign interference in America's elections." The letter warns that the movie's release in the United States would amount to "foreign interference in our elections." "The Movie, released six months before the November 2024 election, is directed at influencing the 2024 election by falsely defaming President Trump," he wrote.

The day after the Cannes Film Festival premiered “The Apprentice,” a biopic of Donald J.
