There might be another listener in the room at your doctor's appointments now or in the near future: ambient AI. Ambient AI is a technology that records and automates transcripts of conversations in real time — like a scribe. Over 15,000 patient visits were conducted "using this type of ambient AI technology to augment the documentation," he says. Seliby Perkins is prepared for patients to either decline the use of ambient AI during their visits or have a lot of questions about how it works. Prior to implementing ambient AI at TGH, the hospital set up an AI governance group with physicians, ethicists and experts in compliance, risk, privacy and security.

I work at my clinic 40 hours a week, but I used to spend a lot of my time documenting patient notes outside those hours. AdvertisementLast fall, I started using Suki AI, an AI-powered voice assistant, to help me make notes from patient interactions. I'm in favor of using AI for notetaking, but do have hesitations about using it for other purposes in the medical field. I signed up to trial Suki AI, which I heard the American Academy of Family Physicians endorsed, and a competitor product. I'm all in when it comes to using AI for transcription and summing up visits, but we have to make sure we have appropriate guardrails when going beyond that.

Joe Biden’s decision to end his re-election campaign is being hailed as an act of great patriotism, of putting the national interest over individual political fortunes. Patriotism and ambition need not stand opposed; they can and should come together, as they so often do among the men and women who seek power or who seek to retain it. It is no disrespect to Joe Biden to recall that before finally deciding to end his re-election campaign, he tried hard to avoid doing so. “I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future, all merited a second term,” he said in his Oval Office address. Only when the polling and the money started going wrong did he yield to what now seems inevitable.

The findings open a new window into what life was like for scribes in ancient Egypt during the third millennium BC. Skeletal cluesLead study author Petra Brukner Havelková, an anthropologist at the National Museum in Prague, has specialized in identifying activity-induced skeletal markers for nearly 20 years. A drawing shows the parts of the skeleton most affected by the sitting positions and work carried out by scribes. But skeletal changes in their knees, hips and ankles also point to a squatting or crouching position that many scribes preferred. The chewing explains why their jaws were overloaded, while long hours of writing likely caused the skeletal changes observed in their right thumbs, the researchers said.

CNN —One of the earliest books in existence is expected to fetch upwards of $2.6m when it goes up for auction later this year. The Crosby-Schøyen Codex, which was written in Coptic on papyrus in Egypt, is the earliest Christian liturgical book, according to the international auction house Christie’s, which will be holding the sale in London on June 11. Carbon dating suggests the book dates back to sometime between the middle of the 3rd and 4th centuries. One of the earliest witnesses to the spread of Christianity, the codex features the first epistle of Peter and the Book of Jonah. As such, the codex is the oldest known book in private hands.

Investors aren't anticipating healthcare funding to surge to anything resembling 2021 levels this year, and fewer deals could mean shutdowns for many companies running low on cash. Multiple healthcare startups have announced raises this year at Series B and beyond. Investors said there's now a higher bar for which startups get venture funding compared to 2021, however. Exits and shutdowns aheadWhile a number of biotech startups have jumped into the public markets already this year, the IPO window for healthcare startups has remained firmly shut. Still, many investors are optimistic that a few healthcare startups will test the waters later this year.

Another AI medical records startup, DeepScribe, raised a $30 million Series A round in January 2022. As healthcare startups dive headfirst into building artificial intelligence products to sell to hospitals, a new report suggests many health systems don't yet have policies to support the tech. In a survey of 34 US health systems leaders, only 16% reported having systemwide policies for AI usage and data access. Some health system leaders said they haven't developed policies because the industry is in the early stages of AI adoption. As a multi-stage VC fund, Lightspeed has an advantage in its exposure to both early-stage and later-stage healthcare markets, Imanbayev said. And many later-stage healthcare startups still have plenty of room to grow, he said. The first one to three years are often slow-moving for a healthcare startup, too, as it works to get its first partnerships with payers or providers, he said. But they also tend to be less risky, since later-stage startups should have revenue streams or partnerships that demonstrate their value. Lightspeed led value-based care startup Aledade's $260 million Series F in June 2023, an unusually large deal as other investors cut much smaller checks.

Love letters sent to French sailors have been opened for the first time in 265 years.
