How Every Representative Voted on McCarthy’s Stopgap Funding BillSpeaker Kevin McCarthy on Friday unsuccessfully put forward a long-shot measure to provide stopgap funding for the federal government and avoid a shutdown.
The effort failed when Democrats in the House and hard-right members of Mr. McCarthy’s own party, who had vowed not to back a stopgap spending bill under any circumstances, opposed the measure.

Even if the House had passed the measure, which included vastly reduced stopgap funding for the government as well as severe immigration restrictions, it was exceedingly unlikely to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate.
