☆ Rare gladiator-shaped knife handle gives insight into Roman celebrity culture

CNN —A rare knife handle in the shape of a gladiator has been discovered at Hadrian’s Wall in the north of England, shining a new light on the celebrity status of the ancient Roman combatants. The secutor gladiator depicted on the knife handle wears a helmet, holds a big shield and has his left hand out, which would have been holding a sword. The knife handle was discovered in a river at Corbridge Roman Town on Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, England. The 2,000-year-old knife handle was found in the Tyne River at Corbridge Roman Town on Hadrian’s Wall, a defensive barrier built by the occupying Romans in northeast England. “This beautifully made knife handle is a testament to how pervasive this celebrity culture was, reaching all the way to Hadrian’s Wall at the very edge of the Roman Empire,” she added.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will undergo surgery on his hamstring and miss the rest of the season, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday. Prescott partially tore his hamstring in the second half of Dallas’s Week 9 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. In September, the Cowboys signed Prescott to a four-year, $240 million contract with $231 million guaranteed, the richest contract in NFL history. Cooper Rush started in place of Prescott during the Cowboys’ 34-6 loss to the Eagles on Sunday. In his career, Prescott has thrown for 31.437 yards, 213 touchdowns and 82 interceptions, with a 98.1 passer rating.

☆ Ridley Scott says Joaquin Phoenix got cold feet on 'Gladiator,' Russell Crowe called it 'unprofessional'

“Gladiator” director Ridley Scott recently told The New York Times that Russell Crowe said Joaquin Phoenix was being “terribly unprofessional” on set when Phoenix was getting cold feet and had to be convinced to stay on the movie. Crowe headlined “Gladiator” as Maximus, with Phoenix starring as the villainous Commodus. “[Joaquin] was in his prince’s outfit saying, ‘I can’t do it,’” Scott recalled, “I said, ‘What?’ And Russell said, ‘This is terribly unprofessional.’”When asked how he convinced Phoenix to stay on the film, Scott asked: “I can act as a big brother or dad. It appears Phoenix got cold feet on “Gladiator” as well, although Scott was able to get him to stay on. Variety has reached out to Phoenix and Crowe’s representative for comment regarding Scott’s “Gladiator” set story.

Prescott has struggled so far this season, throwing for 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions through Sunday’s game. His 84.5 passer rating through seven games is the worst mark of his career, as is his quarterback rating of 47.5. In his career before Sunday, Rush completed 60.8% of his passes for 1,671 yards with eight touchdowns and six interceptions. The Cowboys, who are in third place in the NFC East, play their divisional rival Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10.

The Dallas Cowboys were walloped at home Sunday, getting blown out to the tune of 47-9 by the Detroit Lions — the Cowboys’ fourth straight loss at home dating to last postseason. The Lions had a 27-6 lead after two quarters — continuing a disturbing trend for the Cowboys. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott struggled, throwing for only 178 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions before he was pulled in the fourth quarter. The loss dropped the Cowboys to third place in the NFC East, behind the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders. After the game, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked if he was contemplating a coaching change.

And they are long-shot races, especially during a presidential election, when ticket-splitting isn’t as common as it used to be. In Florida and Texas, Democrats are focusing on state abortion bans to try to push beyond their recent losses in those states. Cruz’s campaign spent almost $5 million on ads in September and $4 million in the first 10 days of October. The spending disparity is less stark in Florida, where in September Mucarsel-Powell’s campaign spent $8.6 million and Scott’s campaign spent $2.1 million. In Maryland, the Senate race features a similar dynamic, with the race rated by Cook as “Likely Democrat,” even though Harris is expected to win there easily.

The DSCC has pledged a “multimillion" dollar effort to help Mucarsel-Powell, Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried announced Monday in a call with reporters. Regardless of whatever national money comes for Democrats, Scott will no doubt hold his long-running huge cash advantage. “It's no surprise that polling shows this race tied — Floridians know that Rick Scott is far too extreme for our state," Mucarsel-Powell said. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Monday pressed for Republicans to join Democrats in voting to advance the IVF bill. Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon objected, and instead urged their colleagues to support Democrats’ bill during Tuesday’s vote. Another Senate GOP bill aimed at addressing concerns about IVF was introduced earlier this year. On Tuesday, Democratic Sen. Patty Murray blocked a uninamous consent request to pass Britt and Cruz’s IVF bill, ahead of the vote on the Democrats’ broader IVF package. “Our bill is the only bill that protects IVF access while safeguarding religious liberty,” Britt said.

CNN —South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, a contender to be former President Donald Trump’s running mate, is launching a multimillion dollar effort to recruit Black voters to support Republicans in 2024. And that translates into a lot of ticked off people who are looking at the Republican Party,” he said. Trump won roughly 1 in 10 Black voters nationally in 2020, according to multiple estimates, including 12% in CNN’s exit poll. Now independent of that organization, French Gates is free to take bets on organizations and communities regardless of their size or ability to demonstrate their impact. Scott and French Gates’ ex husbands, meanwhile, aren’t getting as many kudos for their charitable work as they might like. Gates, with a net worth of $154 billion, has also faced criticism for the Gates Foundation’s methods. “That can’t happen through the Gates Foundation’s father-knows-best, look-at-me brand of bureaucratic philanthropy.”

CNN —“In space, no one can hear you scream.”“Alien” premiered with that memorable advertising line in June 1979. I went to see “Alien” on its opening weekend with my older brother, knowing relatively little about it. Driving to the Avco cinemas in Westwood near UCLA, we immediately noticed the long line for tickets wrapping around the theater and heading down the block. Yaphet Kotto, Sigourney Weaver and Ian Holm in "Alien." Yet in the 1970s, with films like “Jaws,” “Star Wars” and “Alien,” they seemed to emerge almost organically, yielding screams, either of delight or horror, that, like those memories, have echoed across space and time.

CNN —This piece contains mild spoilers for the Netflix series “Ripley” and a scene in the movie “Civil War.”Are we finally ready to take another look at why we love to hate sociopaths so much? But his rendition of Ripley – highly capable, chameleonic, but never what you’d call charming — represents a refreshing take on one of the most famous sociopaths in literature and film. Gagne feels Hollywood’s nearly always gotten it wrong with portrayals of sociopaths, reducing them to a collection of cartoonish, villainous traits. In fact, I found one of film’s most recent sociopaths to be singularly chilling because of his very plausibility. He’s in Alex Garland’s “Civil War,” the polarizing film about a vaguely-sketched conflict set in the modern-day United States.
