Researchers have now used DNA analysis to uncover just how long ants have been farming fungi, now described in a study published Thursday in the journal Science. To trace the evolution of this relationship between ants and fungi, Schultz and his colleagues built complex family trees. Using the DNA from 475 species of fungi, including 288 species known to be cultivated by ants, the researchers pieced together how all these organisms are related. The study team did the same thing for 276 species of ants, including 208 species of fungus farmers. Ants began farming fungi 66 million years ago after an asteroid hit Earth, according to a new study.

SINGAPORE — Singapore lowered its full-year growth for 2023, as official data on Thursday showed the economy grew 1.1% last year compared to an earlier estimate of 1.2%. Growth in 2023 was largely driven by "other services industries" which grew by 3.9% year-on-year. Information and communications, as well as transportation and storage sectors also drove growth,"All sectors except for the manufacturing sector recorded full-year expansions," the Ministry of Trade and Industry reported. Last year, the manufacturing sector — a key driver of the economy — contracted by 4.3%, reversing from the 2.7% growth in 2022. The construction sector grew by 5.2%, an improvement from the 4.6% expansion in 2022.

CNN —A formerly unknown relative of the most iconic of all dinosaurs, Tyrannosaurus rex, has been newly identified, according to a study released Thursday. Called Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis, the creature likely roamed Earth up to 7 million years before T. rex emerged. But Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis’ bones were discovered decades before the creature officially got its scientific name. “The lower jaw in a Tyrannosaurus rex is actually quite robust. “That set the table for when Sebastian started to look at our specimen and say, ‘Hey, these don’t actually look the same as the famous Tyrannosaurus rex specimens from places like Montana.’”

Green pipes in the Neighbourhood Energy Utility energy center divert sewage to heat pumps. Data centers can heat homes tooAcross the ocean, Stockholm is tapping into a major heat source: data centers. They found that in about 25% of those places there was enough heat underground to recycle for energy. Benz says it's worth considering adding those underground pipes as part of new construction, especially building new streets, which absorb extra heat. Of course, underground heat builds up the most in summer, when people don't need to heat their homes.

It probably doesn't taste like woolly mammoth, a meat specialist and mammoth DNA researcher said. The Belgian startup Paleo says it added woolly mammoth myoglobin to a plant-based burger. The mammoth meatball doesn't have either of those elements from woolly mammoth. Mammoth myoglobin doesn't necessarily bring mammoth flavorThough he didn't taste it, Ryall said everyone could smell the meatball while it was cooking. So why make a mammoth meatball that doesn't taste like mammoth?

[1/3] A meatball made from flesh cultivated using the DNA of an extinct woolly mammoth is presented at NEMO Science Museum created by a cultured meat company, in Amsterdam, Netherlands March 28, 2023. REUTERS/Piroschka van de WouwAMSTERDAM, March 28 (Reuters) - A giant meatball made from flesh cultivated using the DNA of an extinct woolly mammoth was unveiled on Tuesday at Nemo, a science museum in the Netherlands. The meatball was made of sheep cells inserted with a singular mammoth gene called myoglobin. While creating cultured meat usually means using blood of a dead calf, Vow used an alternative, meaning no animals were killed in the making of the mammoth meatball. Vow hopes to put cultured meat on the map in the European Union, a market where such meat as food is not regulated yet.

Improvements in artificial intelligence are the "most important" innovation at the moment, billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates said in an interview published Friday. Microsoft announced this week that its Bing search engine will be powered in part by ChatGPT AI technology. The optimizations that AI can offer for reading and writing, Gates said, will make a "huge impact." In healthcare and education spaces, Gates continued, AI can tangibly improve efficiency and meaningfully improve outcomes. In other words, traditional AI platforms couldn't actually process the language they were taking in.
Changes to travelAll travelers entering Singapore via air or sea must still to submit a health declaration before or on arrival, said the ministry. In addition to removing the need to show proof of a negative pre-departure test, short-term visitors will also not be required to buy Covid travel insurance. Previously, non-fully vaccinated visitors were required to test negative for Covid within 2 days prior to their departure for Singapore. Singapore opened vaccinated travel lanes in April 2022 to facilitate safe resumption of international travel. Further Covid measures were eased at the end of August, as authorities removed indoor mask requirements and allowed non-fully vaccinated travelers to skip quarantine on arrival.

Since his death more than 500 years ago, multihyphenate genius Leonardo da Vinci and his spectacular works have inspired respect and wonder in generation after generation the world over. “Likewise in painting, I can do everything possible as well as any other, whosoever he may be,” da Vinci offered, not incorrectly. Today, his engineering genius and the advancements it inspired are showcased at Milan’s Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci, the largest science museum in Italy. The museum’s Leonardo da Vinci Galleries, reimagined for the 2019 celebrations, use more than 170 historical models, artworks, codexes and installations to bring the artist’s story to life.
