Indigenous researchers are up against a ticking clock: Of the 4,000 Indigenous languages worldwide, one dies every two weeks with its last speaker. He leads First Languages AI Reality, an initiative of the Mila-Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, where researchers are building speech recognition models for over 200 endangered Indigenous languages in North America. However, first, he must overcome a major roadblock: There aren’t enough Indigenous computer scientist graduates — people who know the language and culture — to tackle these language preservation projects. “We only graduate one or two Indigenous Ph.D.s in AI and computer science every year,” he said. That’s where the handful of Indigenous engineers who do exist come in: They are leading organizations like First Languages AI Reality, IndigiGenius, Tech Natives and the Wihanble S’a Center for Indigenous AI to train Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian computer science students to preserve Indigenous culture and language.

But the floodgates really opened last year when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at 31 years old. “It feels really dumb to feel hopeful.”About a third of cancer patients struggle with depression, anxiety and other psychiatric disorders, although these conditions often go undetected and undiagnosed. But this neglect comes at a significant cost, with mortality rates up to 39% higher among cancer patients with depression when compared to those without mental illness. In a 2023 study of 230,000 patients, 10% of people had depression or anxiety before their cancer diagnosis, and 22% were diagnosed afterward. Similarly, hormone-blocking drugs, which are commonly used for prostate and breast cancer, can contribute to fatigue and mood changes, while cancer surgeries can profoundly affect one’s body image and sense of self.

It uses genetic data … to see if having certain genes linked to depression also makes people more likely to have menstrual pain. The findings help expand the important, and often overlooked, discussion around mental health and period pain. Below, experts elaborate on newfound and known associations between period pain and depression, why a genetic cause can’t be inferred from a genetic connection, and ways you can manage depressive symptoms and painful periods. On the other hand, experts noted that the opposite relationship — period pain or reproductive shifts preceding depression — has occurred in both human and animal research and in clinical practice. Additionally, methods experts know to be effective in treating period pain can also improve depression, Amies Oelschlager said — such as exercise, yoga, stress-reduction techniques, dietary changes and good sleep quality and quantity.

Are scented candles bad for you? What the science says
  + stars: | 2024-11-29 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
The risk of toxic emissions is greater when candles are scented or dyed, which is another reason why paraffin-free candles aren’t immediately in the clear. The association’s stance is based on an October 2021 study that consisted of burning 24 soy and paraffin candles, scented and unscented. However, the research was a joint effort between the NCA, the European Candle Manufacturers Association and the Latin American Candle Association. If you simply can’t resist using scented candles, look for those with essential oils or candles labeled as phthalate-free. When burning scented candles, do so in small doses to avoid headaches or irritation of the respiratory system or eyes.

President-elect Donald Trump said he intends to nominate Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a Stanford University professor known for his criticism of Covid lockdowns, to serve as the next director of the National Institutes of Health. In a statement Tuesday, Trump said, "Dr. Bhattacharya will work in cooperation with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to direct the Nation's Medical Research, and to make important discoveries that will improve Health and save lives." Bhattacharya gained national attention in October 2020, when he co-wrote the "Great Barrington Declaration," an open letter calling on public health officials to roll back Covid lockdowns. Several days after the Great Barrington Declaration came out, 80 researchers from the fields of public health, epidemiology and more published a joint letter in the medical journal The Lancet, calling the idea "a dangerous fallacy." Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, called the proposal unethical.

Wind turbine technicians face one of the highest rates of work-related injuries, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Despite the high demand for wind turbine service technicians, the profession remains "underrated and overlooked," she adds, offering untapped potential for job-seekers who crave adventure and a competitive salary. While you don't need a bachelor's degree to become a wind turbine service technician, some jobs might require you to complete a 2-year technical program or apprenticeship. To look at the short list of names Donald Trump is hoping to appoint to the country’s leading public health roles, it’s easy to see that Covid-19 has remade the country and its ideological arrangements — but perhaps especially the Republican Party. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, is the most conspicuous example — a reflexive anti-establishment agitator who has trafficked in conspiracy theories about the origins of AIDS, 5G and especially the dangers of common vaccines. Kennedy has called the Covid vaccines, which have probably saved more than 20 million lives globally, “the deadliest vaccine ever made,” and as recently as during his own presidential campaign, he suggested that the coronavirus might be an “ethnically targeted” bioweapon that preferentially spared Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people. But the others named for top public health posts, though not transparent cranks, are also Covid contrarians whose most important qualification for these positions are their crusades against the public health establishment during the pandemic period: Stanford’s Jay Bhattacharya to lead the National Institutes of Health, and Johns Hopkins’s Marty Makary to run the Food and Drug Administration. Dave Weldon, Trump’s pick to oversee the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was a vocal vaccine skeptic long before the pandemic.

To better understand the extinct giants, Qvarnström and his colleagues investigated overlooked fossils known as bromalites: remnants from the digestive system — aka dinosaur poop and vomit. The analysis, which took 10 years to complete, allowed the team to piece together why dinosaurs came to prominence.
