“Nickel Boys,” Ross’ first narrative feature, falls in line with his professional and personal mission. I was a really, really, really good kid because I was afraid something small would happen and it would just escalate, and life would be derailed, and I’d let my parents down and everything they’ve done would go to waste.”For Ross, “Nickel Boys” is also very much tied to his acclaimed documentary. “She actually lives the character, which is a little bit distressing when the scenes are really, really emotional because we shoot them four or five times,” he said. He’s already won best director honors from the Gotham Awards and the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and received a Critics Choice Awards nomination. As a film, “Nickel Boys,” which also stars Daveed Diggs in a small but important role, has received several best picture nods, including the Golden Globes.

A video showing soldiers placing an Israeli flag on the roof of a school in Gaza has been miscaptioned in online posts that claim it shows the Al Shifa hospital. Israeli troops entered Gaza’s biggest hospital Al Shifa on Nov. 15, with Israel saying its forces found weapons as well as an underground structure it called a Hamas tunnel shaft after two days of searching the hospital complex, while Hamas denied the assertion. A post (archived) on social media said: “This is the IOF putting up a flag at Al-Shifa Hospital. The video circulating online, however, does not show the Al Shifa hospital. The video shows a UNRWA school in Gaza, not the Al Shifa hospital.

As an incentive, he promises Robert an early release if he succeeds in capturing them. Ghost-catching proves easier, at least initially, than the daily grind confronted by Robert’s school friends and foes, all of whom have their own tragic back stories. “You’re not the only one in trouble,” the ghost of a slaughtered young Black man reminds him. This concentrated attention sharpens the suspense; we’re tightly focused on the questions: Will Robert survive, and if so, what will it take? His transformation tracks the novel’s own capacity to be, at once, a supernatural historical novel and a straight-up page-turner.
