TAIPEI, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Taiwan Vice President William Lai will stop in New York and San Francisco in the United States on his way to and from Paraguay for the inauguration of its new president, Taiwan's presidential office said on Wednesday. Taiwan's government last month announced Lai's transits without specifying details, drawing ire from Beijing, which slammed Lai as a separatist. Lai, the front-runner for the island's presidential vote in January, will stop in New York on Aug. 12 on his way to Paraguay and in San Francisco on Aug. 16 on his way back to Taiwan, the office said. Yui said the arrangement for the U.S. transit was based on the principles of comfort, safety, convenience and dignity. TAIPEI, July 25 (Reuters) - Driven by a surge in demand for artificial intelligence, Taiwanese chip maker TSMC (2330.TW) plans to invest nearly T$90 billion ($2.87 billion) in an advanced packaging facility in northern Taiwan, the company said on Tuesday. "To meet market needs, TSMC is planning to establish an advanced packaging fab in the Tongluo Science Park," the company said in a statement. For advanced packaging, especially TSMC's chip on wafer on substrate (CoWoS), capacity is "very tight," Wei said after the company reported a 23% fall in second-quarter profit. Even as the leading Apple (AAPL.O) supplier ramps up its expansion abroad, it plans to keep its most advanced chip technology in Taiwan, a global powerhouse in manufacturing semiconductors that power everything from smartphones to electric vehicles. TAIPEI, May 17 (Reuters) - Taiwan's main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party will pick New Taipei City mayor Hou Yu-ih to be its presidential candidate in the election next year, a senior party source told Reuters on Wednesday, with China tensions set to top the election agenda. The KMT favours close ties with China while the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) champions Taiwan's separate identity. The senior party source said the KMT will announce Hou as the presidential candidate later on Wednesday. A second party source said Hou is widely expected within the party to become the candidate. He has vowed to defend the Republic of China, Taiwan's official name, if it was attacked.

"We are taking notes from Zelenskiy," a senior Taiwan security official said, referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's strong presence on social media. "We can't even fix sea cables on our own," the official said. "What if one day all 14 of Taiwan's undersea cables connecting us to the outside world break? Taiwan's military has long prepared back-up plans, including a fibre-optic network for communications within Taiwan, satellites, high-frequency radio, and microwave systems. "So the first step (for China) - with about 99 percent likelihood - is to cut our sea cables," Huang said.

TAIPEI, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Major Apple Inc (AAPL.O) supplier and iPhone assembler Foxconn (2317.TW) said on Tuesday it had hired Chiang Shang-yi, a former top executive at Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC (2330.TW) and Chinese chipmaker SMIC, to lead its growing push in the chip business. Foxconn, the world's largest contract electronics maker, is best known for assembling iPhones and other Apple products, though in recent years it has been expanding into chips to diversify its business. Chiang previously worked as vice president of research and development at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker. He was more recently the vice chairman of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (0981.HK) (SMIC), the largest and most advanced chipmaker in China. Chiang resigned from his position at SMIC last November, roughly a year after joining the company for the second time.

TAIPEI, Nov 2 (Reuters) - U.S. Federal Communications Commissioner Brendan Carr will visit Taiwan this week, the de facto U.S. embassy in Taiwan said on Wednesday, the latest senior official from the country to visit the island. Carr will meet with "Taiwan interlocutors" to discuss issues including telecommunications and cybersecurity from November 2-4, the American Institute in Taiwan said in a statement to Reuters. China has stepped up military activities near democratically governed Taiwan since August when it conducted blockade drills around the island following a visit to Taipei by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Taiwan's government says the People's Republic of China has never ruled the island and so its sovereignty claims are void.
