Nick Begich III, the Republican son of a prominent liberal political family in Alaska, has defeated Representative Mary Peltola to win the state’s sole House seat, according to The Associated Press, ousting one of the nation’s most vulnerable Democrats and adding to Republicans’ slim House majority. This time, Mr. Begich benefited from a G.O.P. Ms. Peltola, the first Alaska Native elected to Congress, staked her campaign on her working-class appeal and presented herself as a solutions-focused pragmatist fighting for the state’s future. Before Ms. Peltola, the last Democrat to represent Alaska in the House was Nick Begich Sr., Mr. Begich’s grandfather. Former Young aides called Mr. Begich deceitful and disloyal to their boss and chose to back Ms. Peltola instead.

Vice President Kamala Harris will make an appearance on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, according to three people familiar with the planning. It’s not hard to conclude that former President Donald Trump himself makes it nearly impossible to have the type of debate Vance and Walz participated in Tuesday night. But Trump has never participated in a debate that didn’t devolve into something more pugilistic and even immature and juvenile at times. Going into this debate, I assumed that both vice presidential nominees would be more focused on the tops of the tickets. It's an interesting decision given how it seems as if the Trump campaign team desperately wants to re-attach Biden’s unpopular brand to Harris. I think Trump and his team are convinced Harris needs another debate more than Trump does.

The vice presidential debate between Tim Walz and JD Vance scored more than 43 million viewers on TV Tuesday night, according to Nielsen estimates. An unknown number of additional viewers watched the debate on YouTube and other online platforms. Four years ago, 57 million tuned in to the only vice presidential debate of the 2020 election cycle between Harris and then-Vice President Mike Pence. In 2008, a record 69.9 million watched Joe Biden and Sarah Palin face off on television in the most-watched VP debate, according to Nielsen. But Trump continues to shun offers of another debate, so the VP debate may be the last of this election cycle.

CNN —Buckingham Palace revealed the first official portrait of King Charles III since his coronation on Tuesday, and it’s proving to be divisive with its lurid red brushstrokes. The 8.5 by 6.5-foot painting is by British artist Jonathan Yeo, who has painted high-profile subjects throughout his career including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, actor Nicole Kidman and education activist Malala Yousafzai. Artist Jonathan Yeo's oil on canvas portrait of Britain's King Charles III. It’s what Yeo captures here.”While the celebrated artist works mainly in oils, he has dabbled in another medium: collage. I thought I was beyond shockable, but this week has been profoundly shocking for me. I spent the bulk of my adult life on the right-wing side of things, generally rooting for the Republican Party, because I thought that party best served America. They have to mouth the Trumpian prejudices to survive in this era, but somewhere deep inside, the party of Reagan still lives in their souls. Donald Trump has owned this party for years. If he told them to kill the immigration compromise because he needed a campaign issue, they were going to kill that proposal.
