CNN —The Greek Islands, known for their idyllic towns, rugged landscapes and sun-baked beaches, are in the grip of a serious crisis. “They combine lack of water resources — shallow aquifers, rare rivers or dams — with a tremendous rise in water demand during summer,” he told CNN. Beryl will likely create dangerous rip currents along much of the US Gulf Coast for the holiday weekend. “Life-threatening beach conditions” will begin Friday afternoon and persist through the weekend for the Gulf Coast, the National Hurricane Center warned Thursday morning. “Beachgoers should be extremely wary of these conditions over the holiday weekend,” the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi urged Thursday. Beryl is set to emerge in the Gulf of Mexico this weekend after it roars through the Caribbean and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The National Hurricane Center’s forecast calls for Beryl to restrengthen as it tracks across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico this weekend. It will then push toward Mexico’s coast and make landfall Sunday night in far northeastern Mexico. Anyone from Mexico’s eastern Gulf Coast to Texas and even Louisiana should keep a close watch on the forecast in the coming days. Even if Beryl makes landfall in northeastern Mexico, wind and rain from the cyclone will likely impact parts of the US’s Gulf Coast.

CNN —Beryl is the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph with stronger gusts, according to a 5 p.m. EST update from the National Hurricane Center. That this formed so early in the season – and in this part of the Atlantic – is a sign of the hyperactive hurricane season to come, according to research from Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane expert and research scientist at Colorado State University. Normally, ocean temperatures aren’t warm enough in this region in June and July to help tropical systems thrive. That’s hardly the case this year, and one of the reasons behind record-high hurricane season forecasts over the past few months. Both have low odds of developing over the next week, but given the unusual early season action and favorable ocean temperatures, they will have to be watched closely.

CNN —The wildfire in Texas has already killed two people, demolished hundreds of structures and obliterated thousands of cattle as it became the biggest blaze in the state’s history. Some 8 million people across the Central Plains are under “red flag” warnings and temperatures are above normal in the Texas Panhandle. So far, the Smokehouse Creek Fire has spread across more than 1 million acres and has become the biggest Texas wildfire on record. And the fire is just one of five blazes currently scorching the Texas Panhandle, destroying as many as 500 structures. Sunday’s fire weather threat will be greatest for the Texas Panhandle and western Texas, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

CNN —Nearly the entire population of California remains under flood alerts as the rain-soaked state braces for more precipitation and officials urge people to try to stay off the roads early this week. Officials are concerned about “excessive runoff from moderate to heavy rain,” which may lead to flooding, according to a post from the city on X. The National Weather Service office in Sacramento implored residents to have a means to get weather alerts and said threats on Monday include: brief tornadoes, large amounts of small hail, heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds. The weather service said 3 to 5 feet of snow are possible where altitudes are 9,000 feet or above. CNN —A stronger and longer-lasting atmospheric river event is set to hit California this weekend, bringing a considerable risk for flash flooding, mudslides, damaging winds, and heavy mountain snow. Nearly 40 million people are under flood watches including San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego. In Southern California, widespread rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected – more than a month’s worth of rain for most. A more widespread Level 2 exists for much of coastal California including San Francisco down through Los Angeles. On Monday, the Level 3 of 4 risk expands farther south to include Los Angeles.

CNN —A US Navy reconnaissance jet with nine crew members aboard crashed into water off the Hawaiian island of Oahu on Monday after overshooting the runway at a US Marine Corps base there, military officials said. There were no casualties aboard the P-8A Poseidon aircraft, a twin-engine multimission patrol and reconnaissance jet with the airframe of a Boeing 737 passenger plane, according to Marine Corps spokesperson 1st Lt. Hailey Harms. Pictures showed the aircraft upright with its wings slightly above the waterline in Kaneohe Bay off Marine Corps Base Hawaii on the main island of Oahu, north of the capital of Honolulu. The P-8A Poseidon is a workhorse of US Navy operations. P-8 aircraft are also flown by the Australian, New Zealand, British, Norwegian and Indian militaries, according to Boeing.
