Joan of Arc: Why does her image still resonate?
  + stars: | 2024-10-15 | by ( Tacita Quinn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
CNN —More than 800 years after her birth, Joan of Arc — a patron saint of France — remains an object of not just historical, but cultural fascination. Humble beginningsOne of five children in a peasant family in Domrémy, in north-eastern France, Joan was born in the year 1412. The Amazonian image of Joan of Arc in armor is perhaps the most recurrent one in popular culture, inspiring thousands, if not hundreds and thousands, of similar depictions. It also provided the inspiration for Carl Theodore Dreyer’s silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) starring Renée Jeanne Falconetti. She is also a cautionary tale for young women, a brutal warning of the fickle nature of celebrity and a symbol of morality and strength.

Approximately 80 House Democrats and at least six Democratic senators are expected to skip Netanyahu’s speech on Wednesday, according to sources and public statements reviewed by CNN. House Democratic leadership has given their members room to make their own decisions about whether to attend the speech. Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray, a Washington state Democrat, also declined to preside over the speech, leaving Senate Foreign Relations Chair Ben Cardin, a Democrat from Maryland, to preside, a source familiar told CNN. “I’m not attending the Netanyahu address because I don’t want to condone his behavior over the last 10 months,” Jacobs told CNN. “This is a war criminal that nobody, not a single one of our elected officials should be meeting with Netanyahu,” JVP communications director Sonya Meyerson-Knox told CNN.

Many Democrats, along with foreign leaders who the US counts as allies, say Israel’s actions clearly cross a red line – if not Biden’s, then their own and those of international law. Would that be a red line?” MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart asked during an interview. His answer, with its incomplete sentences, did not state what might constitute a violation of the red line or what his response would be. “I went over the red line issue, which I know is the obsession of this group, last week. Whether Biden drew a red line or not, his counterpart in Israel found reason to dismiss the president’s comments.

He’d let Putin take all of Europe,” Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz said on CNN after Massie announced Tuesday he’d join Greene in her effort to oust Johnson. “Let’s just hope that that does not happen, and that we can do our responsibilities, protect and defend our own democracy as we protect theirs,” former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said. “If Speaker Johnson wants to talk to Hakeem Jeffries, I think we’d be open to something like that. If only a handful of Republicans vote to oust Johnson, only a handful of Democrats would be needed to step in and help him keep his job. Parties or friendly get-togethers can be fun, healthy environments to replenish energy or blow off steam. Depending on your level of social anxiety, though, a small family gathering or happy hour with friends can also be a source of stress. "I feel that part of etiquette is about putting people around you at ease," she told CNBC Make It last year. "Instead of etiquette being a restricting convention, I see it as being an empowering tool." Here are three common, but potentially awkward, social situations and how to handle them with ease.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has made it clear the U.S. will strike back after a deadly drone attack killed three service members and wounded more than 40 at a small base in Jordan over the weekend. On Tuesday, Biden bluntly said “yes” when asked if he'd decided how to respond to the attack. Target options range from inside Iran, including on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force, to Iranian ships at sea and Tehran-backed militia groups and key militant leaders in Iraq and Syria. HIT MILITIA GROUPS AGAINThe most likely move would be to hit Iran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria again. Hawkish Congress members said Biden should directly target Tehran for the deadly attack on the base in Jordan.

It was also the most bipartisan censure vote in nearly 13 years, garnering the support of 22 Democrats and the vast majority of the House Republican conference. Our present-day censure warsUnder their new majority, Republicans changed House rules to allow individual members to force votes on resolutions. Nearly two dozen of Greene's GOP colleagues voted that down, leading Republican Rep. Rich McCormick of Georgia to introduce a narrower resolution that ultimately passed. Brian Mast of Florida for comparing Palestinian civilians to Nazis. "These censure resolutions are not appropriate an instances where people say things that we don't agree with," a frustrated Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland told reporters on Tuesday.

Two Republican lawmakers have filed separate resolutions to censure Tlaib this week, after a similar effort failed last week. “I have been really careful, partly because our Michigan delegation is so small, and we work together,” Stevens told CNN. “Democratic Rep. Brad Schneider is circulating a statement condemning Tlaib’s recent comments but stopped short of saying he supports a censure resolution. Last week, 23 House Republicans opposed a Tlaib censure resolution led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. But a censure motion is not the way to do it.”The proposed Tlaib censure has sparked a tit-for-tat among lawmakers looking to target one another across the aisle.

WASHINGTON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Moderate Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives have formed a working group on artificial intelligence aimed at tackling the issue of what restrictions, if any, should be put on the technology. The New Democrat Coalition announced the formation of the group on Tuesday, saying it would work with the Biden administration, companies and other lawmakers to develop "sensible, bipartisan policies to address this emerging technology." While artificial intelligence has been used for several years, it surged in popularity earlier this year with the rise of ChatGPT because of generative AI's ability to use data to create human-seeming prose. The group is to be headed by Representative Derek Kilmer, a Democrat from Washington state. In July, the White House announced that AI companies including OpenAI, Alphabet (GOOGL.O) and Meta Platforms (META.O) had made voluntary commitments to implement measures such as watermarking AI-generated content to help make the technology safer.

To the Editor:Re “‘My Body Is a Clock’: Portraits of Chronic Care,” by Sara J. Winston (Opinion guest essay, July 2):I want to thank Ms. Winston for her essay about the challenge of living with a chronic health condition in America. She clearly captured the persistent fear that lives in me and every American with a chronic condition who depends on continuous treatment. It was diagnosed in early childhood, and I require daily inhalers, oral immune-suppressant medications and vigilance to keep my condition in check. My life choices were all based on the essential requirement of maintaining affordable, continuous health care: my career, my employers, proximity to hospitals and a pulmonologist. Our American health care system, which relies heavily on employer-provided health insurance and is unaffordable for those with no health insurance, is a nightmare for people like Ms. Winston and me.

Chronic illness is well hidden from society. Before I had a name for what ailed my body, I thought of myself as dehydrated and out of shape. At that time, I looked at chronic illness as an outsider. In the fall of 2015, under the care of a neurologist, I began a monthly intravenous treatment of medication that blocks immune cells from entering the brain and spinal cord. I travel 65 miles to a site in the Hudson Valley for the infusion therapy.

The letter said the Nigerian Air Force is committed to human rights and “further deliberations” on the issue, according to the report. “The absence of details raises the question of whether the air force carried out the air strike based on mere suspicion,” Human Rights Watch said. The U.S. State Department and the Pentagon had no immediate comment about the airstrike or the U.S. relationship with the Nigerian Air Force. Before now, neither the Nigerian government nor the military had provided any public explanation for what happened on Jan. 24. When a friend makes a joke at your expense or lobs a "playful" insult your way, it can be hard to know how to proceed. Acting as if the comment didn't offend you could invite more of the like, but refuting it might result in conflict or, at least, discomfort. She prides herself on knowing what to say and how to say it, even in situations as uncomfortable as a friend putting you down. If you find yourself on the receiving end of a sassy remark, you can counter it with kindness and class with just one question.

The United States has paired security assistance to Nigeria with training focused on compliance with international law. Nigerian military leaders told Reuters the army has never targeted children for killing. The Senate on Thursday is holding its first hearing on the Chinese spy balloon that floated over the United States last week before it was shot down over the weekend. The hearing comes as the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard complete a recovery operation of the downed spy balloon roughly six miles off the coast of South Carolina. On Saturday, Biden gave the order to take the 200-foot-tall spy balloon out of the sky. The operation resulted in an F-22 fighter jet shearing a hole in the bottom of the balloon with a sidewinder missile. "In our engagements, we are again hearing from our partners that the world expects China and the United States to manage our relationship responsibly.
