It's ramping up its efforts this holiday to get people to shop while watching TV. Walmart is making its biggest push yet this holiday season to get people to shop while watching TV by debuting its first feature-length movie. Walmart didn't share specific results of last year's experiment but made some key tweaks this time around:AdvertisementFirst, "Jingle Bell Love" is a feature film. Add the fact that shoppable TV doesn't always fit neatly into ad agencies' buying practices, and it's been slow to take off. Walmart"Jingle Bell Love" isn't the only way Walmart will try to get people to shop from their TVs this holiday season.

Naysayers and market bears were annihilated last year after a better-than-expected return for the S & P 500 ETF in the post mid-term election year of 2023. My bullish view is that the recent 2% drop in the S & P 500 reveals opportunity versus signs of a much larger pullback. .VIX 6M mountain The CBOE Volatility Index, 6 months My last input into this bullish view is looking at a chart of the S & P 500 ETF (SPY) . If you concur that equity markets should perform well in this first month of January in 2024, the below bullish risk reversal should allow you to capture a short-term move higher. This risk reversal is being used as an aggressive bull trade.

The Santa Claus rally is in trouble. With one day left in the trade, the S & P 500 is down 0.1% in the past six days. Fortunately, a negative Santa Claus rally period doesn't happen very often, only 12 times since 1969 — less than 25% of the time. "That is 16 out of 16 years, which includes years with recessions, like 2020," Clifton notes. The outperformance is notable: The S & P tends to be stronger by 1.3% on average.

Had I done him a disservice — parenting him according to the holiday tradition I'd created on my own? AdvertisementAs grade school went on, I noticed one of these traditional traditions didn't leave me feeling cozy like the others: New Year's Resolutions. AdvertisementI chose never to make another resolution againBeginning in my early 30s, I resolved never to make another resolution. I finally had a New Year's tradition I felt good about — until my son got into the car as confused and claustrophobic as I'd felt in my childhood. My son made his first New Year's Resolution last year, and to keep it old school, he also set an intention.

Friday is the official start of the Santa Claus rally. What the Santa Claus Rally is, and isn't Over the years, Jeff Hirsch of the Stock Trader's Almanac has repeatedly told me the key to understanding the Santa Claus rally is that it is not a trading strategy, it is an indicator. Fortunately, a negative Santa Claus rally period doesn't happen very often, only 12 times since 1969 (less than 25% of the time). In the years when the Santa Claus period is negative, the S & P is up an average of only 5.0%, versus an average gain of 9.1% in all years. You can see this very clearly in this chart: The common explanation is that: 1) markets are stronger with a sitting president because a sitting President can pull levers to help the economy, and 2) markets tend to be weaker with no sitting president because of increased uncertainty around economic outcomes.

During one photo shoot, I wouldn't hug Santa because I was shy and afraid of beards. While it was fun, my career never took off, but I enjoy the memories. A Bay Area couple who tied their Christmas tree to the roof of their car had it stolen on Friday. Security footage shows a person casually cutting the ropes and loading the tree into their own car. The couple was eventually given another Christmas tree by a local business, KGO-TV reported. The San Mateo Police Department told KGO-TV that the Christmas tree case was "unique" and that the theft suspect hadn't been identified yet. The traditional gingerbread White House recreates the classic story by featuring a sugar cookie replica of the book along with Santa's sleigh flying above the grounds. The White House released a fact sheet and was allowing the news media to see all the trees, lights and ornaments before the first lady’s event. National Guard families, who were joining Biden as part of Joining Forces, her White House initiative to show appreciation for military families, will be among the first members of the public to see the decorations. The official White House Menorah is on display in the Cross Hall, which runs between the State Dining Room and the East Room. Seventy-two wreaths sporting red ribbons adorn the north and south exteriors of the White House.

And a steady drip of Black Friday deals, started early in November at many retailers, has also delayed the rush, as some shoppers bet that the best deals are still coming. Holiday shoppers spent 7% less in dollars and 6% less in units from mid-October to mid-November compared with the year-ago period, Circana found. Mario Tama | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesBlack Friday state of mindAmong the biggest themes this holiday season: shoppers are hungry for deals and willing to wait for them. "We're going to have a sustained drumbeat of great offers for the entire holiday season, starting this week," he said on a call with CNBC. Some retailers, such as Best Buy, are trying to rush shoppers to hit the "buy" button by dangling short-term sales.

This time last year, the S&P 500 was coming off its all-time closing high, which had arrived on 2022's first day of trading. It's only happened four times, but when the S&P 500 sees back-to-back losing years, the second is always worse. Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York, U.S., March 2, 2020. And if you look at Bank of America's Sell Side Indicator, a year in the green for the S&P 500 seems to be in the cards. Morgan Stanley just revamped a nine-stock list that's beaten the S&P 500 by 18% over time.
Investing in Space: A year to forget for space stocks

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. For most anyone with money in the market, 2022 was a year to forget – and space stocks were no exception. Remember, these space SPAC names all came to market at about $10 a share. Morgan Stanley in a note to clients recently highlighted those deals as evidence that "space companies [are] on Santa's List," and I suspect M&A won't be slowing down in 2023. A programming note: Investing in Space will be taking the next week off for holiday travel.

Morning Bid: Wall Street on Santa's naughty list

This year, it looks like Santa Claus has no plans to visit Wall Street. The S&P 500 (.SPX) is on course for its third weekly decline and the famed "Santa rally", where the index stages a run-up in the week leading to Dec. 25, hasn't materialised. The index rallied straight into the third week of January in just 22 of the 90 years. On average, since 1932, the S&P 500 has returned some 0.4% in any given Santa rally week. The worst pre-Christmas week was in 1957, bang in the middle of what was known as the "Eisenhower recession".
