ByteDance's publishing company, 8th Note Press, plans to release physical books. After the monumental success of "BookTok" — a community of bibliophiles on the platform that discusses books and shares what they are reading — TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, started publishing digital books through its publishing company, 8th Note Press, last year. 8th Note Press is now teaming up with Zando, an independent publishing company, to release a line of print novels to sell in retail stores starting in 2025. "This partnership marks an exciting new chapter for 8th Note Press," Jacob Bronstein, head of editorial and marketing, told Business Insider in a statement. Debut novelist Sanibel — who writes under a mononym — sold her book "To Have and Have More" to 8th Note Press last year.

Citrus County: Beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday, residents in any structure incapable of withstanding 110 mph winds will be under a mandatory evacuation order, the sheriff’s office said. That includes campers, tents, mobile homes and manufactured homes. A mandatory evacuation order for zones A and B is set to begin at 6 a.m. Tuesday. Glades County: A voluntary evacuation order will begin Tuesday at 1 p.m. for residents in mobile homes, RVs and low-lying areas. Lee County: Residents in Zones A and B are under evacuation orders that went into effect at noon Monday, officials said.

The storm is quickly strengthening, already boasting winds of 65 mph, according to an update Sunday morning from the National Hurricane Center. It is forecast to intensify into a hurricane by Sunday night — and a major hurricane by late Monday. Hurricane and storm surge watches will likely be issued for parts of the western Florida coast on Sunday — with dangerous storm surge expected for some areas just slammed by Helene. “This is something that potentially would be greater power outages than what we just saw with Hurricane Helene,” the governor said, noting the state’s residents still have a couple of days to get ready. Assets deployed to assist with Hurricane Helene recovery in Tennessee and North Carolina have also been ordered back to Florida, DeSantis said.

CNN —Thousands of Florida residents have been forced to evacuate as the state prepares for rapidly strengthening Tropical Storm Helene, which could bring powerful winds, flooding and life-threatening storm surge to areas already hard-hit by recent hurricanes. The Big Bend area faces the most serious storm surge: up to 15 feet of it is possible. Over in Sanibel, one couple who met during Hurricane Ian in 2022 and nearly lost everything are now going to weather Tropical Storm Helene together, CNN affiliate WINK reported. Large clouds move over Havana due to the proximity of the tropical storm Helene, on September 24. Officials in neighboring Pinellas County warned hundreds of homes would likely flood with a higher storm surge than in past destructive storms.

Ian killed 75 people in Lee County, nearly half of the statewide death toll of 149, officials said. At that point, the National Hurricane Center flagged the possibility of a storm surge covering much of Cape Coral and Fort Myers. Parts of Fort Myers Beach had a 40 percent chance of a six-foot-high storm surge, according to the surge forecasts. In Lee County officials said they were waiting to make an assessment the next morning. Officials expanded their evacuation order later in the morning, and by the middle of the afternoon, Lee County officials were more urgent in their recommendation.

CNN —As the hurricane season closes, a handful of blockbuster storms made history after an eerily quiet first half of the season gave false hope. In fact, we didn’t have any named storms from July 3 to August 31, the first time that’s occurred since 1941. One of those storms was Hurricane Ian, which hit land in late September and will go down as the most memorable storm of the 2022 season. “Tropical storms have formed in every month outside of hurricane season, and there have been a few hurricanes, too,” NOAA said. Historically, we’ve seen at least 15 named storms form in the month of December, even all the way up to December 30.

CNN —An increase in infections with a rare flesh-eating bacteria was reported in Florida in the days after Hurricane Ian due to catastrophic flooding from the storm. Ian made landfall as a Category 4 storm on September 28 in Lee County, which includes Fort Myers and Sanibel Island in Southwest Florida. The Florida Department of Health in Lee County warned residents of the risks of Vibrio vulnificus on October 3. “DOH-Lee is observing an abnormal increase in cases of Vibrio vulnificus infections as a result of exposure to the flood waters and standing waters following Hurricane Ian. Since September 29, 2022, 26 cases of Vibrio vulnificus associated with Hurricane Ian have been reported to DOH-Lee.

Many people in the small coastal community, which faces the Gulf of Mexico southwest of Fort Myers, did not have flood insurance coverage. It appears that, despite an increased occurrence of devastating flood events, a declining percentage of people nationwide have flood insurance policies.
