A group of more than a dozen Republican lawmakers is urging a collegiate athletic conference to ban transgender women from competition after reports of a trans student competing on the s women’s volleyball team of a participating university. “Under these guidelines, it is only fair that biological males play men’s sports and biological females play women’s sports.”“Clearly, the Mountain West Conference has dropped the ball,” it continues. In September, SJSU volleyball player Brooke Slusser joined a lawsuit filed by more than a dozen women athletes against the NCAA, which oversees collegiate athletics, about trans athletes’ participation in school sports. The lawsuit argues that the NCAA violated the Title IX rights of cisgender female athletes by allowing transgender women to compete against them. Just last week, Slusser and 10 other former and current athletes in the Mountain West Conference filed a separate lawsuit against the conference and three SJSU staffers, accusing them of violating players’ Title IX rights.

CNN —Running back Ashton Jeanty continued his standout, historic season on Friday, setting a single-season school rushing record and helping No. 13 Boise State Broncos to a 42-21 win over San Jose State on Saturday. Such has been his consistency that Jeanty has recorded a 100+ yards game for the 10th consecutive game – a Mountain West Conference record. Currently, Boise State is 9-1 on the season, and 6-0 in Mountain West play. “All the past running backs are great and amazing but to keep the legacy and tradition going of running backs at Boise State is a big deal to me.”

“It’s disappointing it’s come to this point,” she said, calling it a "failure at every level of leadership.”The Mountain West Conference said it is taking the suit’s allegations seriously. “The Mountain West Conference prioritizes the best interests of our student-athletes and takes great care to adhere to NCAA and MW policies,” the conference said in a statement to NBC Bay Area. Already, four teams in the Mountain West Conference — University of Nevada, Reno; University of Wyoming; Boise State University; and Utah State University — have forfeited games against the SJSU Spartans. Separately, Southern Utah University, which is not in the Mountain West Conference, forfeited a match. One member of the women’s volleyball team at San Jose State University has signed on to being part of a federal lawsuit against the NCAA challenging the presence of transgender athletes in women’s college sports. As with other points of dispute in the struggle over gender identity and transgender rights, one thing opposing sides have in common is framing their stance as a matter of what’s fair and right. This political and cultural backdrop makes the attention surrounding the SJSU situation more understandable. Anawalt echoes such an idea — that a resolution to the “fairness” question is muddy, elusive and perhaps ultimately unanswerable. And so where do you draw the bright white line in terms of what’s fair and what’s not fair?”

Las Vegas AP —Mountain West Conference Commissioner Gloria Nevarez said Thursday the forfeitures that volleyball teams are willing to take to avoid playing San Jose State is “not what we celebrate in college athletics” and that she is heartbroken over what has transpired this season surrounding the Spartans and their opponents. Four teams have canceled games against San Jose State: Boise State, Southern Utah, Utah State and Wyoming, with none of the schools explicitly saying why they were forfeiting. You just don’t let it happen.”After Trump’s comment, San Diego State issued a statement that said “it has been incorrectly reported that an San Diego State University student-athlete was hit in the face with a volleyball during match play with San Jose State University. “We’re a volleyball team that wants to compete and get better,” he said after Thursday night’s loss in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A fourth university has forfeited its women’s volleyball match against San José State University following controversy over the gender identity of one of the team’s players. In the lawsuit, Slusser says the teammate who was the subject of the media coverage told her she was a trans woman. Tony Hoang, the executive director of Equality California, said that in forfeiting matches against SJSU, school administrators are harming all students involved. The Republican governors of both Utah and Idaho publicly supported decisions by Southern Utah University, Utah State University and Boise State University to cancel their matches against SJSU. Previously, trans athletes’ participation in sports was regulated by state sports associations, school districts and, in college athletics, the NCAA.

Spruce Pine, North Carolina has no running water or electricity, more than a week after Helene ripped through the town of 2,200. Mines in Spruce Pine produce the world’s purest form of quartz, which plays a central role in chip manufacturing. Now, the town’s exceedingly valuable supply of high-purity quartz is at risk, threatening to cripple the $600 billion global semiconductor industry. “The Spruce Pine community has been hit particularly hard,” Sibelco said in a statement on Sept. 30. For the semiconductor industry, the challenges that any long-term disruption to the Spruce Pine mines would present cannot be overstated, experts say.

Yoshihiro Uchida, Peerless Judo Coach, Is Dead at 104

Yoshihiro Uchida, the longtime San Jose State University coach who helped establish judo as one of the most popular martial arts in America — and who was widely regarded as the best college judo coach in history — died on June 27 at his home in Saratoga, Calif. The son of Japanese immigrants, Uchida, who went by the nickname Yosh, began coaching judo at San Jose State in the 1940s, while he was still a student there. Americans had long incorporated elements of judo into other combat sports, and returning soldiers from the Pacific Theater brought a new level of interest in martial arts to the country. Uchida, who had been practicing judo since he was 10, despaired over the quality of the training available, especially at the higher levels. Working with a judo coach at the University of California, Berkeley, he established standards for competition, including weight classes, and in 1953 won approval from the Amateur Athletic Union.

All those late coaching moves added some intrigue to the first Wednesday of February, a day that once highlighted the recruiting calendar but has been anti-climactic ever since the 2017 launch of a December signing period. New coaches had to re-recruit prospects who had signed to play for a different staff and now were free to look elsewhere. So did Brent Brennan, who left San Jose State to take over for Fisch at Arizona. Washington refortified its class by adding about several players who originally had signed to play for Fisch at Arizona. Alabama also lost cornerback Jameer Grimsley, who signed with the Tide in December but will now play at Florida instead.

San Jose State is working to finalize a deal with former Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo to replace Brent Brennan as the Spartans head coach, two people with direct knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Saturday. ESPN first reported Niumatalolo was being targeted by San Jose State as its next head coach. Niumatalolo is the winningest coach in Navy history, going 109-83 in 15 seasons before being fired after the 2022 game against Army. Niumatalolo has said that if he got another chance to be a head coach, he would likely move away from the run-heavy scheme. Missouri and Texas A&M were the first teams to join the SEC in 20 years. Financial benefits and concerns about conference stability lured Boston College to become the A.C.C.’s 12th member in 2005. Penn State, one of the last major programs to remain independent, became the Big Ten’s 11th member in 1993, setting off a wave of realignment across college football. The Missouri Valley Conference stopped sponsoring football after the 1985 season. Arkansas departed for the SEC in 1991, signaling the beginning of the end for the Southwest Conference, long associated with N.C.A.A.

New York CNN —The Internal Revenue Service has good news for millions of taxpayers in 17 states who received a one-time special state payment last year to offset inflation and other negative economic impacts: Those payments won’t be subject to federal income tax. Prior to the conclusion of its review of state special payments, the agency had suggested recipients hold off on filing their 2022 returns until it made its determination. The IRS decision regarding the federal taxability of special state payments for residents of other states is a little more nuanced. On your 2021 federal tax return, you either claimed the standard deduction, or you itemized. So the amounts that potentially are subject to federal income tax may not be large.
Millions of taxpayers in other states got different types of special payments from their state governments as well — such as income or property tax rebates. In the meantime, the agency advises filers who received special state payments to hold off on filing their returns until guidance is issued. “The best course of action is to wait for additional clarification on state payments rather than calling the IRS,” the agency said. Keep in mind, each state issued special payments for different reasons (e.g., inflation relief, surplus revenue rebates, disaster relief, etc.). So the amounts that potentially are subject to federal income tax may not be large,
