CNN —One person died and another was seriously injured in a dog attack in San Diego’s Mira Mesa community, according to the San Diego Humane Society. Humane Society officers responded to an urgent call from the San Diego Police Department just after noon Friday about a man being attacked by multiple dogs. Humane officers obtained video footage showing the owner walking the dogs toward the park “approximately two hours before San Diego Humane Society received the assistance call from SDPD,” the Humane Society stated. The dogs involved in the attack were later signed over to the Humane Society by a second owner. “This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” said Nina Thompson, director of public relations for the San Diego Humane Society.

The Summary A report on proposed changes to U.S. dietary guidelines suggests encouraging people to eat more beans and lentils for protein and less red meat. Eat more beans, peas and lentils as protein sources and decrease consumption of processed and red meat — those changes are among the recommendations detailed in a new report suggesting potential updates to U.S. dietary guidelines. Under the current dietary guidelines, beans, peas and lentils are categorized as both vegetables and protein foods. Replacing some red and processed meats with plant-based protein sources could help address that, Odoms-Young said. "That's not saying that you can't eat animal protein, but how do you have a diet where you can increase the amount of plant-based protein in the diet," she said.

An animal rights extremist believed to be behind a pair of bombings in Northern California over two decades ago was caught in Wales on Monday, authorities said. FBI Director Christopher Wray celebrated the capture of Daniel Andreas San Diego, 46, saying on Tuesday the suspect will finally be held "accountable" for his alleged acts of "violence and destruction." He's also accused of sending a "bomb strapped with nails" that went off at a nutritional company, Shaklee Corp., in nearby Pleasanton, on Sept. 26, 2003. The FBI believed that San Diego, who was born in Berkeley, bombed the firms because they had worked with another lab that had conducted animals experiments. “There’s a right way and a wrong way to express your views in our country, and turning to violence and destruction of property is not the right way," Wray added.

An eighth-inning rally capped by sacrifice flies by second baseman Gavin Lux and outfielder Mookie Betts put the Dodgers in front. This title, the eighth in franchise history, can stand beside the Dodgers’ trophy from the pandemic-shortened season in 2020. The precedent feels preposterous until you consider the current Dodgers who will one day join them in the Hall of Fame. “Mark,” he told Freeman, “wants to win really bad.” That desire became clear to Ohtani when he met with the Dodgers. After Freeman launched his grand, Gibsonian walkoff in Game 1 against the Yankees, the Dodgers got the job done.

The relievers stitched together 27 outs against a Mets team that had appeared allergic to cardiac arrest this month. AdvertisementWhen Dodgers officials thought about Ohtani, they conjured fantasies about endless streams of revenue and a decade of contending for the World Series. For a few hours after the story broke, Dodgers team president Stan Kasten wondered if the team had built its future around a fraud. The Dodgers hung nine runs on the Mets in Game 1, eight in Game 3 and 10 in Game 4. In Game 6, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza turned to Sean Manaea, his best starter, who had quieted the Dodgers in Game 2.

Objects thrown onto the field by fans at Dodger Stadium led to a roughly 12-minute delay Sunday during a heated playoff game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. With San Diego leading 4-1 entering the seventh inning of Game 2 of the National League Division Series, two baseballs were thrown from the grandstands toward San Diego left fielder Jurickson Profar. After the balls were thrown near Profar, he quickly approached umpires along with San Diego’s manager, Mike Shildt, to complain. Security officers lined the field as trash was thrown toward the San Diego bullpen, near Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. San Diego walked away with a series-tying 10-2 win to even the series 1-1.

Here’s what you need to know:Two key changesHistorically, buyers were not expected to pay their real estate broker directly. That’s because Realtor commission fees — to both the buyers’ agent and the sellers’ agent — were paid by a home seller. Tiffany Hagler-Geard/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesThe second change affects the relationship between prospective home buyers and their real estate agents. A key element to these agreements is that a buyer’s agent cannot receive more compensation than what the buyer initially signed onto, even if a seller is willing to offer more. The National Association of Realtors agreed to settle litigation over commission rules for US real estate agents, clearing the way for possible changes in how Americans buy and sell homes.

Mars may be drenched beneath its surface, with enough water hiding in the cracks of underground rocks to form a global ocean, new research suggests. The findings released Monday are based on seismic measurements from NASA’s Mars InSight lander, which detected more than 1,300 marsquakes before shutting down two years ago. Just because water still may be sloshing around inside Mars does not mean it holds life, Wright said. His team combined computer models with InSight readings including the quakes’ velocity in determining underground water was the most likely explanation. Wet almost all over more than 3 billion years ago, Mars is thought to have lost its surface water as its atmosphere thinned, turning the planet into the dry, dusty world known today.

CNN —Data from a retired NASA mission has revealed evidence of an underground reservoir of water deep beneath the surface of Mars, according to new research. A team of scientists estimates that there may be enough water, trapped in tiny cracks and pores of rock in the middle of the Martian crust, to fill oceans on the planet’s surface. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter took an image of InSight sitting on the Martian surface on February 2, 2019. “It’s certainly true on Earth — deep, deep mines host life, the bottom of the ocean hosts life. CNN —San Diego’s newest giant pandas are acclimating well to their new state-side home, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said Tuesday. The zoo shared first-look photos of the pair, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, who are the first giant pandas to enter the United States in 21 years, according to the zoo. Since their arrival in the Golden State on June 27, the zoo says, “They are acclimating well to their new home in a private habitat and will not be viewable to the public for several weeks.”Yun Chuan is a nearly five-year-old male who can be identified by his "long, slightly pointed nose," the zoo said. They were given a celebratory farewell at the Chinese base, attended by American and Chinese dignitaries, including performances and a gift exchange, according to a statement from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. China loans pandas to more than 20 countries under a program often referred to as “panda diplomacy.” Its panda loans with Washington stretch back to 1972 – though the number of loans have decreased in recent years as US-China relations have worsened. The San Diego Zoo, one of the world’s most renowned, was the first American institution to carry out cooperative research on giant pandas with China. Yun Chuan’s mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at San Diego Zoo in 2007 to parents Bai Yun and Gao Gao, according to a press release issued by San Diego Zoo in April. Grandmother Bai Yun was born in China in 1991, and arrived at the San Diego Zoo in 1996.

For castle builders: Mission Beach, San DiegoSan Diego’s temperate climate allows for barefoot beach days year-round. For those who’d rather build with sand than lie in it, Mission Beach has another advantage: San Diego Sand Castles and the sand sculptor JT Estrela. Mr. Estrela, a former math teacher, offers lessons in the art of sand castle construction on this family-friendly Southern California beach, where the sand is perfect for castle building: The grains are fine but not too silty, clean below the tide line, free of shells and rocks, and pack hard. In his two-to-three-hour sessions (starting at $160 for two people, $20 for each additional person), Mr. Estrela works with families to build elaborate five-foot-tall castles. The goal is for participants to “feel like this insider of arcane knowledge,” he said.

Would the bacteria from her ear help scientists find phages that would treat the eye infections as well? By the following January, the CDC said at least 50 patients in 11 states had developed superbug infections after using preservative‐free artificial tears. It was a qualified success: The antibiotic-resistant bacteria in five patients were eradicated, while several more patients showed improvements.

CNN —Glaciers in East Antarctica could lose ice faster in the future than previously thought, scientists reported Friday, in an alarming feedback loop where glacier meltwater is triggering even more ice loss and sea level rise as the planet warms. Together, these and other recent studies paint a dire picture of a melting southern continent that poses extreme risk of life-altering sea level rise around the world. Friday’s study factored that feedback into simulations to see how much it could accelerate Antarctic melting and sea level rise. Measuring this phenomenon and accounting for it in climate models is necessary “to get a realistic picture of global sea level rise,” Greenbaum said. “Given this evidence, subglacial melt and discharge is a process that can no longer be ignored in future projections of Antarctica’s contribution to sea level rise,” De Rydt told CNN.
