A California firefighter was arrested on suspicion of arson in a series of small fires that burned in wine country in recent weeks, officials said Friday. Robert Hernandez, 38, was accused of setting five fires between Aug. 15 and Sept. 14 while off-duty, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, said in a news release. Hernadez, a Cal Fire apparatus engineer, allegedly ignited the blazes around Geyserville, Healdsburg and Windsor, the department said. More than 4 million acres burned across the state in 2020, setting a record for the largest number of acres burned in California in modern times, the department said. So far this year, nearly one million acres have burned, including fast-moving blazes in Southern California that threatened tens of thousands of homes and prompted thousands of evacuations in the foothills of San Bernardino County.

Justin Wayne Halstenberg, 34, is alleged to have set off three different fires last week, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Thursday. One of those fires evolved into the Line Fire, that has continued to burn after eight days, while the other two were contained. According to Dicus, investigators were able to tie Halstenberg to the scene of all three fires. The investigation was indicative of “significant arson behavior” and it is possible Halstenberg could be tied to other fires, Dicus said. If convicted on the aggravated arson charge, Halstenberg could be sentenced between 10 years to life in prison.

A brush fire in San Bernardino County has destroyed several homes in the area, according to San Bernardino County Fire Protection District. Named the Edgehill Fire, it ignited Monday at 2:38 p.m. local time, according to Cal Fire. When firefighters arrived on the scene of the fire in the 3300 block of Beverly Drive on Little Mountain, it was only about an acre big and "rapidly moving," San Bernardino County Fire Protection District said. (Reuters) - Six people, including the group chief executive of one of Nigeria's largest lenders, were killed in a helicopter crash in Southern California on Friday, authorities said. Six people were on board the helicopter when it crashed around 10 p.m. near Nipton, California, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. Access Bank Group CEO Herbert Wigwe's death was confirmed by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director general of the World Trade Organization, in a post on X, along with that of Nigerian Exchange Group's former Chairman Abimbola Ogunbanjo. "Terribly saddened by the news of the terrible loss of Herbert Wigwe, Group CEO Access Bank, his wife and son as well as Bimbo Ogunbanjo in a helicopter crash," Okonjo-Iweala said on X. The helicopter was headed to Las Vegas when it crashed near a border city between Nevada and California, according to multiple reports.

CNN —The CEO of a major Nigerian bank, along with his wife and son, were among six people killed in a helicopter crash in the Mojave Desert near the California-Nevada border late Friday night, according to a World Trade Organization official. Both of the helicopter’s pilots were also killed, according to authorities. The aircraft, which was operated by California-based charter company Orbic Air, took off around 8:45 p.m. PT and crashed just after 10 p.m. near Interstate 15 in Halloran Springs, California, Graham said. The NTSB is investigating the cause of the crash and was on the scene in Halloran Springs, California, Saturday night collecting evidence, Graham said at a news conference. Authorities have yet to publicly identify the people killed but condolences have began pouring in for the Wigwe family and Ogunbanjo.
