San Juan (AP) — Puerto Rico’s governor signed a law on Wednesday that prohibits discrimination against people wearing Afros, curls, locs, twists, braids and other hairstyles in the racially diverse U.S. territory. The move was celebrated by those who had long demanded explicit protection related to work, housing, education and public services. “It’s a victory for generations to come,” Welmo Romero Joseph, a community facilitator with the nonprofit Taller Salud, said in an interview. A bronze statue of San Juan Bautista stands in front the Capitol building flanked by U.S. and Puerto Rican flags, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where a ruling was made on Wednesday to ban hair discrimination. “Unfortunately, people identified as Black or Afro descendant in Puerto Rico still face derogatory treatment, deprivation of opportunities, marginalization, exclusion and all kinds of discrimination,” the law signed Wednesday states.

One is from a styled photo shoot my friend invited me to model for just three months after my engagement ended. The other shows the bride who bought the dress from me four years later, wearing it on her wedding day. But when I fell in love in my late 20s, and got engaged two years later, those dreams faded during our wedding planning process. Ultimately, our relationship ended a month before the wedding — influenced by the stress and family tensions, though not solely because of them. I was doing a lot for other peopleBefore I started planning my own wedding, I was swept up in the often-glamorized process.

CNN —A Wisconsin man and his daughter were found dead in Canyonlands National Park in Utah on Friday after the pair got lost and ran out of water while hiking amid soaring temperatures. Albino Herrera Espinoza, 52, and his daughter, Beatriz Herrera, 23, were visiting the southeast Utah park from their home in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and hiking the Syncline Loop Trail where the temperature at the time was over 100 degrees, according to the National Park Service. The pair were found deceased just 15 minutes apart Friday shortly before 6 p.m. after the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the National Park Service “of a deceased hiker in the Upheaval Dome area of Canyonlands National Park,” a news release from the sheriff’s office said. The United States is experiencing a historically hot summer as the heat goes on a July killing spree. It’s been the hottest summer on record for around 100 US cities from Maine to California.

Theodore Roosevelt’s favorite pocket watch, which he carried around the world and wore in the White House, was returned Thursday to the president’s former home on Long Island decades after it was stolen from a mansion in Buffalo. The watch itself is “fairly pedestrian,” with an “inexpensive coin silver case,” the F.B.I. It was a present from Roosevelt’s sister, Corinne Roosevelt Robinson, and he cherished it. “You could not have given me a more useful present than the watch; it was exactly what I wished,” he wrote in a letter to her. Tweed Roosevelt, Teddy’s great-grandson, learned about the watch this Tuesday, when the Park Service contacted him about its recovery, he said.

In 2020 the Puerto Rican government transferred management of the electric grid to a newly minted Canadian-American private company, Luma Energy. It promised to bring clean, reliable energy to Puerto Rico after the state-owned Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority filed for bankruptcy and Hurricane Maria knocked out the island’s ailing electric grid. So why is it that four years later, my mom is still cursing in the dark? Puerto Rico’s power crisis illustrates the consequences of putting essential services in the hands of a private entity. Puerto Ricans deserve a power grid that works for them, not against them.

In fact, tourism is off to a strong start in 2024, with many islands seeing an increase in visitors compared to 2023. If you're planning a trip to the Caribbean and want to maximize your experience, here are some mistakes to avoid making while visiting. Mariette WilliamsThe Caribbean is full of gorgeous resorts, but one of the biggest mistakes I see first-time visitors make is never leaving the property. A New York federal jury on Thursday convicted a Puerto Rico man of a $110 million scheme that was the Department of Justice's first-ever cryptocurrency open-market manipulation case, prosecutors said. The man, 28-year-old Avraham Eisenberg of San Juan, faces a maximum possible sentence of 20 years in prison for the charges of wire fraud, commodities fraud, and commodities manipulation. Prosecutors said Eisenberg fraudulently obtained about $110 million worth of cryptocurrency from the Mango Markets exchange and its customers by artificially and dramatically driving up the price of both futures contracts and the MNGO crypto token, and then borrowing cryptocurrency based on the value of the inflated assets. "When Eisenberg borrowed and withdrew this cryptocurrency, he had no intention of repaying the borrowed funds but rather intended to steal those funds," the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement when he was indicted in February 2023.

Harris' evolving role comes as progressive Democrats target Biden over his pro-Israel stance, polls show him in a tight race against Republican rival Donald Trump. While some have knocked Harris's performance as vice president and value to the reelection campaign in the past, she's moved into a starring role. Current and former Harris aides disputed the idea of any difference in policy between Biden, characterizing their efforts as a difference in tone and emphasis. Biden cannot emphasize divisive cultural issues without alienating more conservative voters he needs to win, current and former aides said. If Trump wins white voters, the largest U.S. racial group, for the third election in a row, Biden needs a dominant showing among a diverse set of groups that typically favor Democrats.

Kamala Harris arrived in San Juan, P.R., last Friday for her first official visit as vice president. The trip was meant, in part, to highlight the Biden administration’s dedication to aiding the island’s recovery. Ms. Harris’s roughly five-hour visit began in the community of San Isidro, in the municipality of Canóvanas. Many of the residents lack land titles, which made them ineligible for the Federal Emergency Management Agency programs Ms. Harris aimed to promote. The area was originally an informal settlement built on public wetlands by those displaced after Hurricane Hugo in 1989.
