The yearslong effort to vanquish Donald Trump in court was a dismal failure. To oppose Mr. Trump in his second term, liberals must learn the lesson of this defeat, which is that there is no alternative to persuading our fellow citizens of our beliefs. Fifty years ago, Richard Nixon’s four Supreme Court appointments — Mr. Trump got only three — shoved the court right and consigned liberals to damage control. In this election, legalistic tactics contributed to Mr. Trump’s victory, helping to produce the popular majority he had never boasted before. For all of Mr. Trump’s misdeeds, prosecuting them was not worth the cost of restoring him to power.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said Sunday that she has “no intention” of dropping the criminal case against a group of President-elect Donald Trump’s allies who sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Arizona. “I have no intention of breaking that case up. I have no intention of dropping that case,” Mayes, a Democrat, told MSNBC’s Ali Velshi. Those charged include big names like former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani and former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. The case is set to go to trial in 2026, but the defendants have sought to have the case dismissed.

CNN —The San Francisco 49ers entered Thursday Night Football against division rivals the Seattle Seahawks needing a win after a stunning home loss to the Arizona Cardinals last time out. A nine-yard pass from Brock Purdy to George Kittle and a six-yard run from Kyle Juszczyk meant San Francisco remained in front of whatever comeback Seattle attempted to mount. However, San Francisco didn’t miss a beat on the ground as rookie Isaac Guerendo stepped in, carrying the ball 10 times for 99 yards. John Froschauer/APThe dual-threat offensive weapon, known for his receiving and rushing abilities, scored on a 76-yard touchdown catch midway through the second quarter. And afterwards, Samuel spoke about the importance of Thursday’s win as San Francisco improved to 3-3.

Whether or not Joe Biden persists in his run for president, America’s gerontocratic crisis will keep on worsening. Gerontocracy transcends government as a full-scale social phenomenon, in which older people accumulate power of different kinds, and then retain it. This form of power is both old and new. The term “gerontocracy” was popularized a century ago by the Scottish anthropologist J.G. Frazer to refer to a very early form of government, in which power reposed in councils of elders.

CNN —What sounds like an enticing historical thriller mostly falls flat in “Manhunt,” an Apple TV+ series about the frantic search for John Wilkes Booth after he assassinated Abraham Lincoln. Anthony Boyle as John Wilkes Booth in "Manhunt." That’s especially true of Booth, through no fault of Boyle’s, who as written possesses less depth than his flamboyantly villainous mustache. “Manhunt” sounds promising on paper, only to mirror Apple’s even-splashier World War II series “Masters of the Air” by offering a meticulously produced window into the past that only fitfully gets off the ground. “Manhunt” premieres March 15 on Apple TV+.

CENTRAL ISLIP, New York, Nov 14 (Reuters) - A former fundraiser for indicted U.S. Representative George Santos pleaded guilty to fraud on Tuesday, adding to the pressure on the embattled New York Republican. U.S District Judge Joanna Seybert accepted the plea, part of an agreement with federal prosecutors, and set Miele's sentencing for April 30. At the hearing, Miele admitted he pretended he was chief of staff to the then minority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, to help solicit contributions for Santos' campaign. Miele is the second person close to Santos to plead guilty to federal charges in recent weeks. Nancy Marks, Santos' former campaign treasurer, pleaded guilty on Oct. 5 to a conspiracy charge for inflating his 2022 congressional campaign's fundraising numbers.

[1/5] Voters are seen at the ballot box at the Old Australian Parliament House, during The Voice referendum in Canberra, Australia, October 14, 2023. "I sincerely hope that Australians, when they walk into that ballot box today, vote 'Yes'," Albanese said in Sydney, according to a transcript. Supporters of the proposal believe entrenching an Indigenous Voice in the constitution would unite Australia and usher in a new era with its Indigenous people, who account for 3.8% of the population and are its most disadvantaged, by most socio-economic measures. Another voter and 'No' campaigner, Greg Mason, doubted the usefulness of an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. Constitutional change requires a majority of votes both nationwide and in at least four of the six states.

The former campaign treasurer to Rep. George Santos of New York will plead guilty Thursday in connection with a criminal case against the Republican congressman, according to a spokesman for prosecutors. That filing said prosecutors will file a so-called information against Marks; such charging documents are routinely used when a defendant has agreed to plead guilty. Santos was charged in May with a 13-count federal indictment in the same court accusing him of campaign finance fraud, money laundering and other crimes. A spokesman for U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York declined to say what Marks will plead guilty to. In August, Samuel Miele, a former Santos fundraiser, was charged in the same federal court with impersonating a top aide to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy while seeking campaign donations.

Some people are critically injured," Fyles told the news conference, adding there was a "wide range" of injuries.
