Having grown up hearing family stories about my father’s lifelong radical politics, Aaron put through a Freedom of Information Act request for the F.B.I. That file is a reminder of what I inherited from him — not just his politics, but the convictions that they were built on. Dad would have been a logical enough target of scrutiny of J. Edgar Hoover’s F.B.I.

On the torrid afternoon of July 6, 1948, Hubert Humphrey departed one kind of inferno to plunge into another. He was bound for Philadelphia, site of the impending Democratic National Convention, where the sweltering weather provided the fitting backdrop to a heated convention. The Democratic convention of 1948 promised to be morose and volatile all at once. The glum mood reflected the failure of liberal insurgents in the party, Humphrey included, to oust the incumbent president, Harry Truman, from the ticket. His speech at the Philadelphia convention, imploring delegates to “get out of the shadow of states’ rights and to walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights,” convinced a decisive majority of the delegates.

Out of the top 100 largest metropolitan areas, Minneapolis ranks 99th in the gap between Black and white earnings. In June, the Department of Justice cited this statistic in its investigation of the Minneapolis Police Department. From routine instances of excessive (and sometimes deadly) uses of force to everyday racist taunts, the Police Department disproportionately abused Blacks and Native Americans with little to no accountability. Reflecting on these patterns, the U.S. attorney general, Merrick Garland, said, “They made what happened to George Floyd possible.”And yet, eight decades ago, as the journalist Samuel G. A MOST TOLERANT LITTLE TOWN: The Explosive Beginning of School Desegregation, by Rachel Louise MartinIn the dozen years since I read “The Warmth of Other Suns,” Isabel Wilkerson’s narrative masterpiece about the Great Migration, one passage has remained embedded in my mind. It is a description of Black men, women and children picking cotton in the 1920s. I was put in mind of that passage as I read Rachel Louise Martin’s “A Most Tolerant Little Town,” her unsparing account of an early effort at school desegregation in the Jim Crow South. It is another to be confronted with a meticulous, day-by-day reconstruction of relentless bigotry in action. To read “A Most Tolerant Little Town” is to be flooded with cross burnings, mob riots, night-riding raids, bombings, street-corner ambushes and racial slurs.
