Gunn suffered ridicule and false rumors after her Paris Olympics performance. AdvertisementThe Olympic breakdancer Rachael "Raygun" Gunn is retiring from the sport after facing a barrage of online hate and misinformation. The 37-year-old Australian became a laughing stock this summer after her viral Paris Olympics performance, which included moves that were compared to a kangaroo hopping and the dancing of a child. Speaking at her concert in Munich in August, Adele said Gunn's performance was her "favorite thing that's happened in the Olympics." "Having that Olympic stamp for any sport changes the game of play," Born Barikor, the chair of the UK organisation Breaking GB, told Fortune.

They want to keep their monthly mortgage payment between $3,000 and $3,500 — or around 30% of their monthly take-home income of about $11,000. However, rising home prices and mortgage rates in recent years have made this goal difficult to accomplish. "We refuse to become 'house-poor' and, like many others, are choosing to sit it out until the housing market is reasonable again," Laura said. With an 11% downpayment, they estimated their monthly mortgage payment would be about $5,000 — about 43% of the couple's take-home monthly pay. I talked to Samuel Freedman, a Columbia Journalism School professor, about his recent book about Humphrey and the 1948 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. The book’s title, “Into the Bright Sunshine,” is taken from a line in Humphrey’s rousing speech on civil rights. In 1968, the Democratic Party was operating under old rules in which primary voters actually had relatively little direct effect on delegates. When Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats bolted from the Democratic Party in 1948, that’s the beginning of the vast majority of the White South becoming Republicans, stepping away from the Democratic Party. Show me a major Republican politician in the MAGA movement who is a fervent supporter of civil rights legislation.

All three films question male conventions and genres in ways that show exactly why we need more films by, and more nominations for, women-directed films. Gaining a better understanding of the impact of artificial light on these winged creatures is crucial as light pollution plays an increasing role in the decline of global insect populations, the researchers wrote. Artificial light confuses nocturnal insectsWhen artificial light does not interfere, nocturnal insects keep their backs pointed toward whatever direction is brightest, which is typically the sky versus the ground. By using insect-scale motion-capture cameras, the researchers determined that the flying insects exhibited three consistent behaviors: orbiting, stalling and inverting. Moths and other insects can become trapped in a disorienting orbit around artificial light sources such as street lamps and porch lights. The new findings could help with conservation by fueling research on how to minimize the effects of light pollution on the insects, Dombroskie said.

It melds elements of mystery and humanity with a dose of high drama as rescuers race against time in their frantic search for a missing vessel with five souls aboard. Should a missing tourism vessel for the ultra-wealthy take precedence over other consequential stories happening around the world? While the press took heat for around-the-clock coverage of MH370, the tragedy was arguably far more worthy of coverage. And yet, the disaster did not inspire a level of coverage close to what major news organizations have devoted to the ocean submersible. Eric Deggans, NPR’s media critic and an adjunct instructor at Duke University, conceded that the coverage of the Titanic vessel has perhaps been over-torqued in recent days.

Buyers who need a mortgage are waiting for rates to fall, causing the share of cash buyers to rise. "It disproportionately enlarges the share of cash buyers making it look like more cash buyers are coming into the market." Mortgage rates have been edging lower over the past month and a half, but experienced a small uptick this past week. Researchers at Fannie Mae predicted that 30-year fixed mortgage rates will trend down throughout 2023 and 2024. "There were fewer cash buyers to leave the market than purchase mortgage buyers."
