The final month of the year is typically a good month for the stock market. The S & P 500 could rise to about 6,081, from where it closed last week at 6,032.38. That means the S & P 500 would top 6,100, according to Johnson, who sees small-cap and midcap stocks as primary beneficiaries of the broadening rally. This means the S & P 500 could end the year around 6,140. On average, the S & P 500 gains 1.6% during this period.

Good morning. Mostly, I hope you have plenty of leftovers. To some — and absolutely to me — they’re the very best part of Thanksgiving. I start with a leftovers sandwich. I’d smash that together and eat it in three bites, leaving the kitchen feeling as if I could go pro.

A jobs report is on deck as well. In data going back to 1945, he noted, the S & P 500 gained an average 1.6% during the month, rising in price more than three-quarters of the time. With the S & P 500 already up 26% on the year, a typical December gain could place 2024 among the best years in history. The S & P 500 has had just six years with gains above 27% over the past 50 years, per FactSet. The Dow Jones Industrial Average topped 44,000 for the first time ever this month, while the S & P 500 exceeded 6,000 for the first time.

"But it's all a give and take here, because we're also going to be seeing a lot of efficiencies come into the labor market, potentially." GSAM strategists aren't sweating about the labor market yet, but they're watching those trends closely. Despite their lofty valuations, GSAM isn't bailing on US equities. That may finally change in 2025 as China's government gets serious about economic stimulus, Wilson-Elizondo said.

Financial stocks are the best-performing group in 2024 and, even though they're widely thought to have more room to run as a sector, a subset of them are even more favorably positioned. The S & P 500 financial sector has surged 36% so far this year, outpacing both the communication services and information technology sectors that contain all the high-flying megacap technology stocks. Markets, in particular, crave certainty, and the clear path forward will allow companies to adjust their business and hiring plans. But stocks may also be reacting to Trump’s victory, in particular. Trump flipped several swing states from President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory, and Republicans also took control of the Senate. So Trump’s victory, at least for now, appears to be keeping those rates somewhat higher. Other so-called Trump trades, including shares of his social media stock, Trump Media & Technology Group, surged Wednesday morning.

The S&P 500 enjoyed a compound annual growth rate of 12.1% from Trump’s surprise election in November 2016 through Biden’s 2020 victory, according to CFRA. “The Trump market was so strong because of a combination of very low inflation, very low interest rates and tax cuts,” said Stovall. The S&P 500’s growth rate under Democrats is 10% compared with 6.7% under Republicans, according to CFRA. In those six years since 1945, where such a dynamic has been in place, the S&P 500 has enjoyed a sizzling growth rate of 16.8%. Sometime in middle school Sam began to think more systematically and globally about ethical obligations. While he was still in high school, Sam started to think hard about the implications of utilitarianism for how he should live his life. There is great nobility in his indifference to his own happiness, but there is also great sadness for us as parents. After everything came apart in November 2022, Sam shared a lot of things with his dad and me that he had never said before. In the end, I am in no position to argue him out of his subjective experience of life.
