Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesFears are mounting that the U.S. could soon experience its own version of Britain's "mini-budget" crisis, with bond strategists warning that Donald Trump's return to the White House brings with it the specter of currency volatility and surging bond yields. The former president's economic agenda has ratcheted up concerns about a surge in consumer prices, which strategists say could spark significant shifts in bond yields and investor behavior. They warn a scenario that mirrors Britain's mini-budget crisis of 2022 is not out of the question. watch nowBritain's mini-budget crisis refers to a tumultuous period under former Prime Minister Liz Truss and ex-Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesDonald Trump's U.S. election victory has ratcheted up concerns about higher prices, prompting strategists to rethink the outlook for global bond yields and currencies. Trump's return to the White House is seen as likely to throw a wrench in the Federal Reserve's rate-cutting cycle, potentially keeping an upward bias on Treasury yields. Bond yields tend to rise when market participants expect higher prices or a growing budget deficit. "Trump's election advances both possibilities as a trade war and increased fiscal spending work at cross purposes," he added. Germany's 10-year bond yield, the benchmark for the euro zone, stood at 2.337% on Wednesday, marginally lower for the session.

Elvis Barukcic | Afp | Getty ImagesSpain's Deoleo, the world's largest olive oil producer, says one of the most challenging moments in the industry's history appears to be drawing to a close, with "liquid gold" prices expected to nearly halve from an all-time high over the coming months. Extra virgin olive oil prices in Spain's Andalusia stood at 6 euros ($6.33) per kilogram as of Nov. 6, according to Expana, an agricultural and food-focused market intelligence firm. Spain accounts for more than 40% of the world's olive oil production, making it a global reference for prices. A person holds a bottle of olive oil on June 21, 2024, in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Shaktikanta Das, governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), during an event at the Peterson Institute of Economics (PIIE) during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank in Washington, DC, US, on Friday, Oct. 25, 2024. Central banks have managed to engineer a soft landing through a period of "continual and unprecedented shocks," but there is still a risk of global inflation returning and of economic growth slowing down, according to India's central bank chief. Speaking Thursday in Mumbai, India, at CNBC-TV18's Global Leadership Summit, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das said monetary policy from global central banks had largely "performed well" in recent years despite conflicts, geopolitical tensions and higher volatility. "A soft landing has been ensured but risks of inflation — as I speak to you here today — risks of inflation coming back and growth slowing down do remain," Das said. Das pointed to several contradictions in global markets to underline his view, including the appreciation of the U.S. dollar, even as the Federal Reserve is cutting interest rates.

It urged motor finance groups to consider setting aside financial provisions to resolve the high volume of complaints. Former U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning says censorship is still "a dominant threat," advocating for a more decentralized internet to help better protect individuals online. Her comments come amid ongoing tension linked to online safety rules, with some tech executives recently seeking to push back over content moderation concerns. "Censorship is a dominant threat. "I think that social media and the monopolies of social media have sort of gotten us used to the fact that certain things that drive engagement will be attractive," she added. "One of the ways that we can sort of countervail that is to go back to the more decentralized and distribute the internet of the early '90s, but make that available to more people."

The 10-year Treasury yield sat near flat at 4.449%, near its highest point since July. The 10-year Treasury yield hovered near a 4-month high on Thursday after Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell indicated that the central bank is in no hurry to slash interest rates. The moves followed Fed Chair Jerome Powell's speech in Dallas Thursday, where he told business leaders the cenral bank doesn't need to quickly cut interest rates. "The economy is not sending any signals that we need to be in a hurry to lower rates," Powell said in prepared remarks. A Dutch court on Tuesday ruled to dismiss a landmark climate ruling against Shell , after the oil giant was ordered to drastically reduce its global carbon emissions back in 2021. In May 2021, The Hague district court ruled that Shell must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 45% from 2019 levels by 2030. Shell's lawyers said demands for companies to curb greenhouse gas emissions could not be made by courts, but only by governments, Reuters reported. The company also said the court ruling would force it to shrink its business without any benefit to the fight against climate change. The burning of coal, oil and gas is by far the largest contributor to the climate crisis, accounting for more than three-quarters of global greenhouse gas emissions.

A landmark decision from outdoor clothing brand Patagonia to dedicate its profits to fight the climate crisis didn't surprise its employees — but that's not to say the process has been stress-free. The move, which made headlines for being a novel marriage of capitalism and charity, prompted some to question whether the transformation would encourage others to follow suit. "They didn't want to sell the company because at the end of the day, yes, they could take the profits out but then it is a one-off situation," Hajikhanian said. "What it was really all about was to create a new way of capitalism, you know, to turn capitalism upside down and inspire other businesses to do things differently — and it felt like a real natural step," she added. "It may have been a really big moment, but for us, it was quite normal."

Donald Trump's election victory on Wednesday sparked a palpable sense of dismay among the climate community, with two key architects of the landmark Paris Agreement warning that the result will stall global efforts to protect the environment. The 78-year-old, who has called the climate crisis "one of the great scams," has pledged to ramp-up fossil fuel production, pare back outgoing President Joe Biden's emissions-limiting regulations and pull the country out of the Paris climate accord — again. The 2015 Paris Agreement is a critically important framework designed to reduce planet-heating greenhouse gas emissions. Laurence Tubiana, a key architect of the Paris Agreement, said Trump's election victory "is a setback for global climate action, but the Paris Agreement has proven resilient and is stronger than any single country's policies." Tubiana, a French economist and diplomat who now serves as CEO of the European Climate Foundation, said the context today is "very different" to Trump's first election victory in 2016.

Silicon anodes vs. solid-state batteriesAnalysts say silicon anodes theoretically offer 10 times the energy density as graphite, which are commonly used in battery anodes today. Silicon anodes, for example, are known to swell significantly during charging, which reduces the battery's longevity. Especially in the West, advances in the area of silicon anodes [are] seen as strategic opportunity to catch up with China. Nonetheless, analysts remain skeptical about when solid-state batteries will actually make it to market. "However, there are significant technical challenges going to 100% silicon anode such as silicon expansion affecting the longevity of the batteries and currently there are several routes to produce silicon anodes," he added.
