Indians have become the biggest group of international students in the U.S., surpassing Chinese students this year for the first time in 15 years. New data released by the State Department in conjunction with the Institute of International Education shows that there are now 331,602 Indian international students in the U.S. (a 23% growth from last academic year), compared with 277,398 Chinese international students (a 4.2% decline). South Korea, Canada and Taiwan follow distantly as the next most common countries of origin for international students, with numbers all well under 50,000. Long the most populous at U.S. colleges and universities, Chinese international students have been falling in number every year since the pandemic. Chinese international students typically come with different priorities, Martel and Khanna said.

While Kamala Harris made history, Vivek Ramaswamy became a household name, and Usha Vance debuted to a tepid national audience, many everyday South Asian Americans were experiencing something altogether different. As these political leaders saw their profiles rise, everyday South Asian Americans experienced increased racism, with anti-South Asian posts online doubling over the campaign season, a new report found. Threats of violence against Asian Americans are up 17% from the baseline, and a vast majority of those threats were directed at South Asian Americans, the data revealed. Still, his Indian American identity has drawn fire. “South Asians, we don’t voice, we don’t make noise, we just silently are suffering,” she said.

“The fact that there could have been a South Asian woman in the White House … we’re not there yet, but it would have been very nice. “There’s a great deal of disappointment in that sense,” said Shakeel Syed, executive director of the nonprofit South Asian Network. She steeped her daughters in all things South Asian, said Harris, who grew up eating South Indian food, like potato curry and masala dosa, and hearing Gopalan speak Tamil. Like many young and progressive Asian Americans, she said Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip has been an important issue for her. After Harris became the nominee, support from Asian American women jumped to 72%. Support from Asian American men also increased, but not as drastically, sitting now at 59%. Though not nearly as strong as Harris’ pull on Asian women, there are factors that might be siphoning Asian men, Ramakrishnan said. Trump has made marginal gains among Asian men too, he said, but Harris’ draw on both groups far outweighs it. “AAPI women and South Asian women view abortion access as health care,” said Varun Nikore, executive director of the nonprofit AAPI Victory Alliance.

Asian Americans now make up 12% of the electorate in Nevada, with Filipinos being the largest subgroup. In 2020, President Joe Biden won 64% of the state’s Asian American vote, while Trump took 35%. But in 2022, support in the Nevada governor’s race was more split among the local Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community, which only voted blue by an 8% margin. But frankly, Covid, or as I call it, ‘the China virus,’ was a step too far,” he said. Trump took a moment to praise the Filipino community, saying he likes their clothes.

As part of his efforts leading up to Election Day, former President Donald Trump will address the Asian American and Pacific Islander community at a rally in Nevada on Thursday. Trump will take the stage in Las Vegas alongside former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii in one of his first events geared toward Asian American communities. Organizers say they aim to bring Asian voters into the conservative movement and convince them Trump is the best choice for them. Exit polling after the 2020 election showed 58% of eligible voters in the community supported Joe Biden, while 40% supported Trump. Progressive Asian American and Pacific Islander leaders take issue with Kirk’s characterization that Asians in the state are aligning with Trump, saying their observation has been the opposite.

A study on long Covid fails to bring researchers closer to finding a diagnostic test. Why there’s no test yet for long CovidAn estimated 17 million people have long Covid, but identifying people with the condition still can't be achieved with one diagnostic test, researchers said this week. So “clinicians are left to continue doing what we have done in the past,” which is to rule out other potential health conditions rather than diagnosing long Covid, they said. The study is part of the National Institute of Health’s RECOVER Initiative, a billion-dollar-plus effort launched in 2021 to research causes and treatments of long Covid. The Freedom Caucus added that in the event of a stopgap bill, funding should be “extended into early 2025” to avoid passing a funding bill that “preserves Democrat spending.” Both demands would spark a standoff with Democratic lawmakers.
