"For all of our lawmakers to approve Sweden's NATO membership, they need to be fully convinced. While there is no clear timeframe on approving the purchase request for the F-16s, Ankara has linked the issue to Sweden's bid. Some analysts say Turkey's parliament could fully ratify the bid by a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Brussels on Nov. 28-29. While NATO member Hungary has also not ratified Sweden's membership, Turkey is seen as the main roadblock to Sweden's accession.

The Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded Monday to two scientists whose work led to the mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. As countries prepared to roll out those shots, The Associated Press took a look at how the vaccines were developed so quickly. ___How could scientists race out COVID-19 vaccines so fast without cutting corners? A head start helped -- over a decade of behind-the-scenes research that had new vaccine technology poised for a challenge just as the coronavirus erupted. Both shots — one made by Pfizer and BioNTech, the other by Moderna and the National Institutes of Health — are so-called messenger RNA, or mRNA, vaccines, a brand-new technology.

It reinforced Erdogan's image of invincibility in the deeply divided NATO-member country, whose foreign, economic and security policy he has redrawn. Pro-government newspapers, part of an overwhelmingly pro-Erdogan media landscape that buoyed his election campaign in the nation of 85 million people, cheered his victory. Erdogan said inflation, which hit a 24-year peak of 85% last year before easing, is Turkey's most urgent issue. Turkey's main pro-Kurdish party, parliament's third largest, was among the opposition parties opposed to Erdogan and is accused of links to Kurdish militants, which it denies. Erdogan, head of the Islamist-rooted AK Party, appealed to voters with nationalist and conservative rhetoric in a divisive campaign that deflected attention from Turkey's economic problems.

REUTERS/Ayhan UyanikMUNICH, April 27 (Reuters) - Turkish citizens based in Germany began voting on Thursday in Turkey's presidential and parliamentary elections, which represent the biggest electoral challenge for President Tayyip Erdogan, who lags in opinion polls, in two decades in power. Polling stations have also been set up in Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne and other towns and cities, according to Turkey's High Election Board. Germany's Turkish diaspora comprises around 2.3 million people, according to the Turkish Community in Germany. Turkish voters in Germany have until May 9 to submit ballots.

While some 300,000 to 500,000 of them were thought to have changed addresses, many of those who had left the disaster zone had not, added Tiryaki. For Yigit, the earthquake and what he sees as the government's slow response to the disaster weighs on him as he decides how to vote.

BioNTech is launching a large-scale trial of mRNA therapies to treat cancer and other diseases in the U.K.LONDON — The U.K. government on Friday announced a partnership with German firm BioNTech to test potential vaccines for cancer and other diseases, as campaigners warned any breakthrough must remain affordable and accessible. Cancer patients in England will get early access to trials involving personalized mRNA therapies, including cancer vaccines, which aim to spur the immune system to attack harmful cells. They will be administered to early and late-stage patients and target both active cancer cells and preventing their return. Peter Johnson, Britain's National Clinical Director for Cancer, said mRNA technology had the potential to transform approaches to a number of illnesses. The government confirmed to CNBC the announcement represented a private investment into the U.K., but would be supported by a new Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad funded by the NHS.

Boston-based Globalization Partners has laid off approximately 100 staff, Insider understands. Globalization Partners, a Boston-based HR and employment platform that rivals venture-backed upstarts like Remote, has cut jobs, with one source indicating around 100 staff have been impacted. Founded in 2012 by Nicole Sahin, Globalization Partners, or G-P, was valued at $4.2 billion after raising $200 million in funding from Vista Equity Partners in January 2022. HR companies enjoyed a pandemic boom through 2020 and 2021 as firms began experimenting with hybrid work, requiring new processes and platforms. Remote, a venture-backed rival to G-P, cut 10% of staff earlier this year, Insider reported.
Professors Ozlem Tureci and Ugur Sahin co-founded BioNTech, which partnered with Pfizer to develop a COVID-19 shot. A cancer vaccine will be widely available for patients "before 2030," said Sahin. The cancer vaccine, which would build upon breakthroughs achieved by the scientists during the development of the COVID-19 shot, may be widely available within just eight years, said Professor Ugur Sahin. That work was the "tailwind" for the COVID-19 shot development, which, in turn, now "gives back" to their cancer research, said Tureci. Keunssberg asked the couple if there was "still a chance" that the cancer vaccine doesn't work.
