Qantas flight makes emergency landing after engine failure
  + stars: | 2024-11-08 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
Sydney Reuters —A Qantas Airways plane bound for Brisbane suffered an engine failure after takeoff on Friday and circled for a short period of time before returning safely to Sydney Airport, the Australian airline said. The airline said its engineers had conducted a preliminary inspection of the engine and confirmed it was a contained engine failure, meaning the internal engine parts stayed within the protective housing designed to keep them safely enclosed. Uncontained engine failures, where engine fragments fly out of this housing, can result in serious damage to the main body of an aircraft. Qantas flight QF520 took off from Sydney at 12:35 p.m. (8.35 p.m. Thursday ET), circled a few times and diverted to land at Sydney, tracking data from Flightradar24 showed. Qantas said the plane landed safely after appropriate procedures were conducted and added it would be investigating the cause of the engine issue.

The move prompted Wall Street giants Barclays and Citi to adopt a more optimistic stance on global cyclical stocks. Barclays believes the Federal Reserve's actions are "clearly designed to pull out all the stops to achieve a soft landing" for the economy. Barclays strategists noted that "cyclicals typically rebounded steadily after the Fed started its rate cut cycle ... as long as it was not followed by a recession." Citi strategists share a similar outlook for European stocks. "The scale of the downgrades has become so extreme of late that we're now approaching a point where negative ERI may be a useful contrarian indicator," the Citi strategists said.

Europe's new Ariane 6 rocket to launch June 15-July 31, 2024

Christophe Ena/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsPARIS, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Europe's new Ariane 6 rocket will stage an inaugural flight between June 15 and July 31 in 2024, the European Space Agency said on Thursday. The keenly awaited window for the first test flight came after a test model of the new rocket passed a key long-firing engine test in French Guiana last week. The maiden flight will carry some smaller satellites, including two from NASA, but since it is still considered a test flight, it will not carry "a major payload", ESA added. The ESA will carry out a few additional tests before the launch to make sure the design is "fault tolerant". Aschbacher said last month he hoped to be able to announce a launch window for an inaugural flight to be held in 2024, depending on the results of the engine test.

Rolls-Royce's overhaul is deceptively ambitious

LONDON, Nov 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Rolls-Royce (RR.L) boss Tufan Erginbilgic wants to push Britain's biggest aerospace company to its limit. On the face of it, Erginbilgic's targets are not overly ambitious. Analysts were already forecasting a group operating margin of 11% in 2025 on the back of an air traffic recovery, according to LSEG data, not far below Erginbilgic's goal of 13%-15%. Yet this is the same margin range of Rolls-Royce's rivals Safran (SAF.PA) and General Electric (GE.N) which make engines for short-haul flights. Rolls-Royce's engines are instead used to power so-called widebody aircraft like Airbus's A330neo, used for transatlantic flights.
