London CNN —King Charles III has marked his 76th birthday on Thursday by opening two food distribution hubs, as part of his Coronation Food Project that he launched a year ago in the hopes of bridging the gap between food poverty and food waste. Charles visited one of the new hubs in south London, which is hosting a “surplus food festival” where meals will be made using food that might otherwise have gone to waste. Since it was launched, the food project has worked with local charities FareShare and the Felix Project, and saved 940 tons of surplus food - the equivalent of 2.2 million meals. Charles speaks with staff at the new distribution center, designed to save and circulate surplus food and to support communities in need. King Charles treats his actual birthday in November like a normal working day, but the bonus of being the monarch means that he actually gets two.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Trump’s “decisive leadership” and his “‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs.”Some Ukrainians were nonplussed by what they saw as the equivocal support provided by President Joe Biden — despite that totaling some $175 billion since 2022 — and say they remain optimistic Trump could offer a new start. “Poland’s leadership will rise to the occasion.”Freed from the responsibility of having to retain diplomatic ties with Trump, some of Europe’s mayors appeared more willing to speak openly about the president elect. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said Trump’s win was “bad news for the world, democracies, Europe, climate, women and Ukraine, a country fighting for our freedom.” She accused Trump of “playing his part” in undermining democracy and the rule of law. “Others will be worried about the future of NATO or tackling the climate crisis.”Beijing most likely sees danger, too, in Trump’s unpredictability as well as his promised 60% tariffs on Chinese goods. But may also see opportunity in what is viewed as his isolationist ability to diminish American influence around the world.

When pollution meets politics, efforts to clean up the air in the world’s big cities can bring risks as well as wins. London and New York got a taste of it this week. London this week published data showing that the air is cleaner since its mayor, Sadiq Khan, made the politically contentious decision to expand fees on polluting cars and trucks driving into London. The air is measurably cleaner in outer London, where opposition to the expansion was robust. “The decision to expand the ULEZ was a difficult one, but the right one,” he said in a briefing with reporters, using the acronym for the low-emission zone.

In short, Trump’s New York congestion comment was classic dead cat. In the same Truth Social message, the former president mused about the impact of congestion pricing elsewhere in the world. After all, congestion pricing has been introduced in a number of cities, from Singapore to Stockholm, over the past 25-odd years. I live about four miles from the edge of the congestion zone, and it’s never once been a problem to circumvent. By most metrics, London’s congestion pricing experiment has been a resounding success.

Sadiq Khan Heads for 3rd Term as London Mayor
  + stars: | 2024-05-04 | by ( Stephen Castle | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Sadiq Khan, the two-term center-left mayor of London, was poised on Saturday to become the first three-time winner of the job by a clearer margin than some of his supporters had predicted. Mr. Khan, from the main opposition Labour Party, was initially elected to the post in 2016, becoming London’s first Muslim mayor, and would now become the first politician to win three consecutive terms since the role was created in 2000. With the Labour Party well ahead in the opinion polls ahead of a looming general election, many analysts had expected Mr. Khan to cruise to a comfortable victory in a city that tends to lean to the left, but some saw the potential for an unexpectedly tight race against Susan Hall, representing Britain’s governing Conservative Party. That prospect quickly faded on Saturday, with Mr. Khan’s party declaring victory and the BBC forecasting him as the winner after results from half of London’s regions showed the mayor exceeding his performance in his last election, in 2021.

Labour's Sadiq Khan wins re-election as London mayor

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan hopes to convince U.S. tech firms to invest more in London. Sadiq Khan was re-elected as London's mayor, final results showed on Saturday, helping to cement the Labour Party's commanding lead over the governing Conservatives in local elections ahead of Britain's national vote later this year. For Labour, London is the latest of a number of councils and mayoralties it has won in the local elections, which took place on Thursday, inflicting heavy losses on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservatives. Opinion polls predict that Labour will win the next national election, propelling its leader Keir Starmer to power and ending 14 years of Conservative government in Britain. Khan, 53, who became the first Muslim mayor of the British capital in 2016, has pledged to build more social housing and work with a future national Labour government to boost police capacity.

CNN —Sadiq Khan has won a third term as London’s mayor, Labour Party sources claimed on Saturday, capping a round of local elections across England that confirmed the political supremacy of the main opposition party. Sunak has resisted calls to outline when he will hold that vote, and Labour leads opinion polls by a huge margin. Keir Starmer’s opposition party won control of eight councils, and also stormed to victory on Thursday in a Westminster by-election in Blackpool. In particular the loss of Oldham council, a north-west English town, where around a quarter of the population is Muslim. If his victory is confirmed, Khan would become the first mayor of London to serve a third term since the post was created in 2000.

Suella Braverman, who was fired from her post as Britain’s home secretary on Monday, had long been a divisive figure at the heart of the governing Conservative Party whose provocative rhetoric won her support on the hard right while alienating more moderate colleagues. The police said that around 145 people were arrested on Saturday, most of whom were counterprotesters, and that nine officers had been injured. In the piece, Ms. Braverman accused the police of a “double standard” in the way they handled protests. Ms. Braverman had made it clear that she wanted the march on Saturday to be banned in part because it coincided with Armistice Day. The article by Ms. Braverman, published a few hours later, appeared to undermine his stance.

LONDON (Reuters) - A post shared on social media purporting to show the mayor of London saying pro-Palestinian marches should take priority over Armistice Day events is fake and police are investigating, a spokesman for the mayor said. The social media clip could further inflame tensions in the capital, a day before a large pro-Palestinian march is planned to coincide with the anniversary of the end of World War One. There are fears there could be violent confrontations as far-right groups have indicated they will protect the Cenotaph war memorial on Saturday, Armistice Day. A spokesperson for London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a member of Britain's Labour Party, said of the social media post: "The Met (London's Police) and their counter terror experts are aware of this fake video that is being circulated and amplified on social media by far-right groups, and are actively investigating." Saturday's pro-Palestinian march has prompted a political row after interior minister Suella Braverman published an article attacking the police's handling of it.

LONDON (AP) — The British government confirmed Sunday it may scrap a big chunk of an overdue and over-budget high-speed rail line once touted as a way to attract jobs and investment to northern England. The Conservative government insists no final decision has been made about the embattled High Speed 2 project. HS2 is the U.K.’s second high-speed rail line, after the HS1 route that links London and the Channel Tunnel connecting England to France. The government hailed it as a key plank in its plan to “level up” prosperity across the country.
