Like many larger Southern Baptist churches, Saddleback does not include the word “Baptist” in its name, and for most of its history it has not emphasized the connection. Three other churches that were expelled in February for having female pastors chose not to appeal the decision. The Southern Baptist Convention, a denomination that is often a bellwether for evangelical America, has expelled five churches from the convention this year over their appointment of women as pastors. The move to enforce a strict ban against women in church leadership comes as some evangelicals fear a liberal drift in their congregations and a departure from Scripture. On Tuesday, two of those churches, Fern Creek Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky., and Saddleback Church in Southern California, appealed their expulsions before thousands of delegates at the annual convention in New Orleans. At the same time, ultraconservatives were moving to amend the S.B.C. constitution to further restrict the role of women in leadership, by stating that a church could be Southern Baptist only if it “does not affirm, appoint or employ a woman as a pastor of any kind.”

The Southern Baptist Convention on Tuesday expelled Saddleback Church, the California megachurch founded by influential evangelical pastor Rick Warren, and four other churches from the denomination because they had female pastors. The decision to remove or “disfellowship” the churches came after the convention’s executive committee determined that the five churches were “not in friendly cooperation” with the denomination, said Jared Wellman, executive committee chairman, in a statement.

California high school senior Landon Jones, 18, said he’s been bullied by his classmates since the fifth grade. “Does Landon live here?” the young man can be heard saying. His dad responds, “Yes, why?”“Someone said to come up here,” the young man can be heard mumbling, before loudly yelling, “because he’s a faggot!” and running off the property. Jones’ dad said the young man ran off and got in on the passenger side of a black Lincoln Navigator before it drove off. LGBTQ middle school students reported higher instances of bullying (65%) than those in high school (49%).

Mary Bourke and Michael Margolis weren’t even thinking of buying a ski house. But when they heard about the sale of a new development of 1,350-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bathroom A-frames going for $579,000 apiece, right on the edge of Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley, Maine, they put money down within a week, closing on the purchase in June. Saddleback had reopened its ski operations in December 2020 after an almost five-year closure. Since then, the new owner, Arctaris Impact Investors, LLC, has invested more than $30 million to revamp the base lodge, build a mid-mountain lodge, add chairlifts and improve snow-making. It is now embarking on a variety of real-estate developments, including the A-frame village, and it plans to build a new hotel, says Jonathan Tower, the company’s co-founder and managing partner.
