In March, the Democratic governor announced a plan to gift several California cities hundreds of tiny homes by the fall to create space to help clear homeless encampments that have sprung up across the state’s major cities. More than 171,000 homeless people live in California, making up about 30% of the nation’s homeless population. The state has spent roughly $30 billion in the last few years to help them, with mixed results. Officials also pointed to a new law signed by Newsom in July to streamline construction of tiny homes. “It’s going to help thousands of people who are going to benefit because of the comprehensive nature of the approach here.”Sacramento and the state have also agreed to place the other 175 tiny homes at the California state fairgrounds.

And then there are neopronouns (“new” pronouns), gender-neutral or nonbinary pronouns that are distinct from the common she, he and they. All pronouns indicate identity and can be used to include or exclude people they describe — neopronouns included, said Dennis Baron, one of the foremost experts on neopronouns and their histories and an emeritus professor of English and Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Other neopronouns are completely original to their user – some may choose to select a noun to describe themselves, like “star” or “starself” in place of binary pronouns like “she” or “herself.” These are called nounself neopronouns, but more on those later. Why people use neopronounsPeople may use neopronouns for the same reason someone else uses “she” and/or “they” — neopronouns may better align with one’s identity. An intro to nounself neopronounsLeaf, sun, star — nounself pronouns are neopronouns that use nature and other inspirations as nonbinary or genderless descriptors.

Reparations Are No More Than a Dream of Privilege

Journal Editorial Report: The state may force everyone to pay for centuries-old wrongs. Images: AFP/Getty Images/The Sacramento Bee/APIf simple logic were the only measure of truth in matters of race, reparations for black Americans would make perfect sense. We have endured four centuries of an especially mean and degrading persecution. Slavery, and the regime of segregation that followed it, was dawn-to-dusk, cradle-to-grave oppression. The only argument against reparations would be that no contemporary offer of reparation could ever be sufficient compensation.

Ron DeSantis' administration admitted it was behind the migrant relocation flights to California. Ron DeSantis' administration confirmed it's behind the recent flights sending migrants from Texas to California — and insisted that the trips were all voluntary and the immigrants were treated well. The Florida Division of Emergency Management shared a 2-minute-20-second-long video with Insider of migrants the agency said boarded the flights. Florida's emergency management agency provided Insider with a table that listed other government officials who had relocated migrants, including Republican Gov. DeSantis acknowledged in September that his administration orchestrated another plane carrying 49 migrants from San Antonio, Texas, to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.

Journal Editorial Report: The state may force everyone to pay for centuries-old wrongs. Images: AFP/Getty Images/The Sacramento Bee/APThe Justice Department last month filed a lawsuit against Tennessee, challenging a state law that prohibits the provision of “gender-affirming medical care” to minors. Such “care” includes not only off-label hormonal treatments but “gender-reassignment surgery” that alters a patient’s body to make it more like that of the opposite sex. Some blue states, meanwhile, are changing laws to ensure children can be subjected to such treatments without their parents’ knowledge or consent. The effects of such treatment are permanent, and the campaign to make it available to minors stands in startling contrast to the national consensus about another set of state laws.

Tyson Foods last week reported its first quarterly loss since 2009 as meat prices tumbled. Tyson’s stock plunged after it reported anemic sales and downgraded its forecast. The quarterly loss at the largest U.S. meat supplier marks a stunning reversal from 2021 and early last year when it earned record profits amid a run-up in meat prices.
