Carol Tan, Rakcent Wong and their son, Atlas, have traveled across 23 countries and counting since the start of 2024. Carol Tan, 36, and Rakcent Wong, 35, often received that age-old advice before having their son, Atlas — but they were determined to prove the naysayers wrong. The Singaporean family took a sabbatical from work to "worldschool" their 4-year-old child and has traveled from Switzerland to Denmark to Nepal, across 23 countries since the start of the year. "We realized [that] after every trip, we always gained something — there's some kind of growth and transformation that we experience, just both on a personal level and as a couple," Wong said. By January 2024, Tan and Wong began their work sabbaticals, took Atlas out of school and the family traveled to their first destination — Greece.

To be sure, there are times when layoffs are necessary for the health — and even survival — of a company. In other words, the pitiless and coldhearted way businesses handle dismissals isn't just destructive to those who get dismissed. Is there a better way to handle layoffs? For starters, Herd says, managers should look the employees they're dismissing in the eye, rather than reading from a script.

I spoke with a group of business people and other leaders of faith who have come to see sabbaticals as a crucial spiritual practice. It’s important to clarify what a sabbatical actually is. What a sabbatical looks like depends on the field. For clergy, sabbaticals provide a break from the intense relational and spiritual pressure of running a church or a nonprofit. For most people in academic fields, a sabbatical offers an opportunity to take a break from teaching in order to focus on research and other projects.

A greater number are also offering remote work options, educational benefits, and fertility services. It's not just about remote work, though that remains one of the most important benefits for many workers. "What we're also seeing is that there are different approaches to hybrid work that people are exploring." This comes as more companies are outsourcing talent from lower cost-of-living countries after the pandemic made remote work more feasible. Some of these companies are also giving staffers the option of shorter workweeks and remote work.
Mark Zuckerberg's leadership is putting Meta on track to fail, a Harvard management expert says — but it's not a lost cause. Digital marketing company Steelhouse, for instance, offers employees $2,000 a year to take any vacation they choose. A number of other larger companies have taken steps to be more employee-friendly in recent years, particularly with parental leave. In August 2015, Netflix began offering salaried employees unlimited paid parental leave for a whole year. (Four months later, it started offering hourly workers 16 weeks of paid leave, where before they received 12 weeks.)
