Femke Halsema, the mayor of Amsterdam, may have touched off a diplomatic incident last week when she said on a Dutch television show that she regretted having used the word “pogrom” the day after attacks on Israelis in her city surrounding a soccer match. Since the incidents, which began late on the night before the Nov. 7 game, Ms. Halsema, a member of the Green Party, said she had seen “the word politicized to the point of propaganda.” In response, Gideon Saar, Israel’s foreign minister, called Ms. Halsema’s statement “utterly unacceptable.” Referring to the attacks, he said, “There is no other word for this than a pogrom.”The word “pogrom” described loosely organized, often deadly riots by local Russians or Eastern Europeans against Jews from the 1880s through the end of the Bolshevik Revolution some 40 years later. Though today it is applied to many ethnically or religiously based attacks, it has never shed its original association, and to describe an attack on Jews as a pogrom will always disinter century-old collective memories. The eagerness of Mr. Saar to reaffirm the word — echoing statements made by Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, and Deborah Lipstadt, the U.S. State Department’s special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism — reflected the international Jewish community’s increased sensitivity to antisemitism in the year since Hamas led an attack into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, that killed 1,200 and kidnapped about 250 others.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday fired his defense minister, Yoav Gallant, a long rumored move that was announced on Election Day in the United States. Gallant will be replaced by Foreign Minister Israel Katz, Netanyahu said in a statement. “In the midst of a war, more than ever, full trust is required between the prime minister and the minister of defense,” Netanyahu said. Netanyahu's decision was welcomed by his ultranationalist National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who congratulated the prime minister on the move. In a nationally televised statement in May, Gallant challenged Netanyahu over his refusal to discuss a cease-fire and hostage deal.

Jerusalem CNN —The Biden administration received another rebuff from Israel Wednesday night – this time from the country’s parliament – over the United States’ long-standing support for the eventual establishment of a Palestinian state. A two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been US policy for decades, but absent negotiations between the two sides, and a lack of sustained effort by the US to make it happen, means faith in such an outcome has dwindled. On Wednesday evening, the Israeli parliament made clear its position, voting by 68 to 9 to reject any creation of a Palestinian state. “The Knesset of Israel firmly opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state west of the Jordan (river). What we have is multilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood and unilateral Israeli rejection,” Scheindlin says.

Israeli agtech startup Beewise Technologies is using AI, sensor, robots and computer vision to save more honeybees as climate change has threatened their survival, leading to more than one-third of bee colonies disappearing each year and threatening food supplies. This social impact business has designed and built high-tech hives that help the bee's chances of survival, and keep it harvesting honey and pollinating crops. Honeybees pollinate $15 billion worth of crops in the U.S. each year, such as vegetables, fruits and nuts, not to mention produce honey. Beewise is not the only startup going after the growing market for commercial beekeeping pollination services, estimated by the USDA at $320 million annually. The American assemblage artist Betye Saar spent her childhood salvaging lost, discarded and forgotten things, like small glass beads, broken necklaces and scraps of colored paper left in trash bins or littering the ground where she walked. “My daughter Tracye calls me a hoarder who found her calling,” Saar says. Some of the objects that Saar collects have sat unused in her converted-garage studio for years before finding their way into one of her artworks. Saar considers this selection process to be a sacred one. “I’ve always felt that old objects hold a power,” she says.

How the Federal Reserve plans to proceed with interest rates will be in focus next week after some recent signs of hotter inflation muddied the outlook. In December, policymakers had penciled in at least three quarter percentage point rate cuts in 2024. On Friday, stocks were headed for a losing week even after the S & P 500, for example, notched a fresh closing record just this week. The chipmaker will be under increased scrutiny next week as CEO Jensen Huang takes the stage for the company's annual AI conference. TD Wealth's Vaidya anticipates four rate cuts coming in the third and fourth quarters, though he said that outlook will remain data dependent.

The Houthi movement said on Tuesday they had launched three drone and missile attacks towards Israel since the start of the Hamas-Israel war on Oct. 7. In what appeared to be a new attack overnight, the Israeli military said it had intercepted an "aerial threat" over the Red Sea. Israeli National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi said on Tuesday the Houthi attacks were intolerable, but declined to elaborate when asked how Israel might respond. Missiles and drones fired at Israel from the Red Sea area since Oct. 7 have so far either been shot down or fallen short. In an Oct. 27 incident, Israel said the Houthis were behind a drone attack that caused explosions in two Egyptian towns on the Red Sea, saying they had been intended to hit Israel.

REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 25 (Reuters) - U.S. auto sales are expected to rise in October but the outlook for the rest of the year remains uncertain owing to the auto workers strike at Detroit Three, a report from S&P Global Mobility showed on Wednesday. "On the surface, with a projected SAAR (seasonally adjusted annual rate) result of 15.7 million units, October auto sales will be stronger than they appear," said Chris Hopson, principal analyst at S&P Global Mobility. New total light vehicle sales in October are estimated to be 1.22 million units, up 3.3% year-over-year, according to the report. "As of the week ended October 22, nearly 150,000 units of vehicle production have been lost due to the respective plant strikes," according to the report. While the impact on sales has been limited in the month of September, production disruptions caused by the strike are expected to affect October sales for the Detroit Three and will likely be sustained in November, the report added.

But when Israel called up its reservists and declared war this week, the response was swift and overwhelming. Most reservists were already in Israel at the time of the call-up - the largest such compulsory mobilisation since the 1973 Yom Kippur War. "I cannot sit here and study medicine while I know that my friends are fighting and my family needs protection. Around the same time, Rosler began exploring video, which was then becoming popular among feminist artists as an affordable way to make and share work without the institutional support that was often denied them. This resulted in another of her best-known works, “Semiotics of the Kitchen” (1975). As her actions become increasingly violent — Rosler uses a manual juicer like she’s breaking a neck — the hostess’s rage takes on broader significance. “The fact that video sucked was part of what made it exciting,” Rosler told me; it allowed her to make work that no one would judge on its aesthetic qualities. "The US inflation shock is over", so the Fed need not hike interest rates any more, according to the chief economist of the Institute of International Finance. The IIF's measure of "inflation generalization" has fallen to the lowest level since February 2021, Robin Brooks said. US inflation has been steadily cooling from its mid-2022's highs, coming in at 4.0% in May on an annual basis. "The US inflation shock is over. In her first book, “Monstrous Intimacies,” Sharpe writes extensively on Walker’s work to reveal how society is programmed to default to racist narratives. The work in Sharpe’s office, like many of Walker’s famous prints and sculptures, is devoid of color. The more time I spend with Sharpe’s work, the more it inflects my ways of seeing the world. According to Sharpe, Blackness is anagrammatical, meaning that the structures that order language, thought and society become disordered — if not destroyed entirely — when they encounter Blackness. “Her work has shown that we, as Black people, are the foils of humanity,” Frank B. Wilderson III, author of “Afropessimism,” told me.

Canadian housing starts slow as BoC rate hikes weigh

TORONTO, April 19 (Reuters) - Canadian housing starts fell more than expected in March, contributing to a slower trend in recent months that follows a rapid increase in borrowing costs, data from the national housing agency showed on Wednesday. The seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) of housing starts fell 11% to 213,865 units from a revised 240,927 units in February, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) said. "The SAAR of housing starts and the trend appear to be returning to pre-pandemic levels," Bob Dugan, CMHC's chief economist, said in a statement. The Bank of Canada has lifted its benchmark interest rate to a 15-year high of 4.50% to tackle inflation. For the first quarter, starts averaged 223,000, the weakest quarter since the depth of the COVID-19 pandemic in early-2020, Robert Kavcic, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets, said in a note.
Most important this week is Friday's core personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index for January. In comparison, the consumer price index (CPI), released this past week, only tracks price changes over time. The market is expecting the core PCE price index to rise 0.4% monthly and 4.9% annually. In addition to the core PCE price index, we're going to be looking closely at the housing and utilities component. Lastly, the January producer price index came in hotter than expected, rising 0.7% from December versus expectations for 0.4% increase.
