Private equity double-dips are a tasty faux pas

Private equity groups are trying something similar in the capital markets: successfully listing a company, then coming back for a second bite by buying it back once its stock craters. Take Synlab (SYAB.DE), listed at the height of a Covid-19 boom in testing by investment group Cinven. European companies listed by private equity groups since 2020 are trading, on average, at a 22% discount to their IPO price, according to data from Dealogic and Breakingviews calculations. The message from such deals, however, is that it’s better to buy a private equity-owned company after it has listed. Follow @aimeedonnellan on XCONTEXT NEWSPrivate equity firm Cinven on Sept. 29 offered 10 euros a share to take Covid test maker Synlab private.

Its 2022 annual report, filed on January 19, said the deal desk should review any deals greater than $500,000. SUSE sales growth was slowing at the time. Reuters could not determine if the deal was vetted by the deal desk nor how many deals have been going through the unit. SUSE and Reuters parent company, Thomson Reuters, are involved in litigation over the use of SUSE software products. SUSE claims that Thomson Reuters breached the terms that allegedly governed its use of SUSE software products.

Suse drops out of SDAX, Krones to take its place
  + stars: | 2023-10-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: 1 min
Oct 5 (Reuters) - Software provider Suse (SUSEG.DE) is to drop out of the German small-caps index SDAX (.SDAXI) following an announcement by Deutsche Boerse (DB1Gn.DE), with packaging and bottling machine maker Krones AG (KRNG.DE) to take its place. The German stock exchange operator said late on Wednesday that Suse no longer met the basic criteria required to remain in the selection indices after its free float dropped below 10%. Last August, private equity firm EQT AB (EQTAB.ST) said it was planning to take Suse private, in a deal to be funded by a special dividend issued by the Frankfurt-listed software company. Suse's stock was down 0.59% at 0707 GMT whereas Krones rose 0.37%. Reporting by Tristan Veyet in Gdansk, Editing by Rachel MoreOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

UK's blue-chip FTSE 100 (.FTSE) fell 0.6% after data showed British retail sales slumped more sharply than expected in July.

IBM's Red Hat has caused an uproar in the Linux community with its latest attempt to squash competitors like Oracle that offer clones of its flagship Red Hat Enterprise Linux software. Oracle has also offered its own version of RHEL called Oracle Linux since 2006, and Oracle and Red Hat have had an antagonistic relationship ever since. And, because that new, you-shall-not-share provision violates the spirit of open source (and some question if it also violates open source licenses), there was a predictable backlash from open source advocates. The core of it — known as the kernel — is built by the Linux Foundation, a non-profit that is separate from Red Hat (although Red Hat supports the foundation). On Monday, Edward Screven, Oracle's top engineering leader, published a blog post with head of Oracle Linux development Wim Coekaerts slamming IBM.

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced Argentinian energy company Ecogas to suspend in-person services for its 1.4 million natural gas customers spread across a distribution network of almost 30,000 kilometers, the company had to act fast to prepare for a surge in demand for its digital channels. Before the pandemic, in-person transactions were the primary touchpoints for energy customers in Argentina. However, Ecogas knew that digital channels could transform the customer experience, so they began a transformation to deliver seamless online and mobile service channels that allow customers to manage their accounts and pay bills. With in-person services suddenly inaccessible, digital channels became the primary customer touchpoint almost overnight. In fact, around 80% of our customers find the online and mobile channels so convenient that they prefer them to the in-branch experience."
