As China's biggest shopping festival of the year gets underway, analysts are starting to favor Chinese logistics companies as a way to play the online shopping trend. The JPMorgan report initiated coverage of U.S.-listed ZTO Express , which the analysts said is China's largest express parcel player with more than 20% of the market. ZTO YTD mountain ZTO Express shares in the U.S. in 2024. Morgan Stanley is less bullish, rating J & T equal-weight while citing competitive risks in China and potential challenges in Southeast Asia. "Cuts on overseas profitability outlook has weakened our investment thesis," the Morgan Stanley analysts said.

REUTERS/Chris Helgren/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSYDNEY, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Santos (STO.AX) said on Thursday an Australian court has granted an interim injunction preventing it from starting work on laying undersea pipelines on its $3.6 billion Barossa gas project off northern Australia. Australia's offshore regulator ordered Santos in January to evaluate the environmental risks to underwater indigenous cultural heritage before starting pipeline work though it did not prohibit the start of work. Santos has said, citing an independent expert, that there were no specific underwater cultural heritage sites along the planned route of the pipeline. A Santos ship was hours away from beginning work on the pipeline, lawyers for Munkara told the court. Santos said the vessel will remain at its current location but no pipeline works will be conducted during the interim injunction.

REUTERS/Chris Helgren/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSYDNEY, Oct 24 (Reuters) - The Australian government said on Tuesday it was reviewing an emergency application filed by an indigenous group seeking to block pipeline construction for Santos Ltd's (STO.AX) $3.6 billion Barossa gas project off northern Australia. Santos, which aims to start producing gas from Barossa in the first half of 2025, did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment. In a quarterly update issued last week, Santos said an independent expert concluded that there were no specific underwater cultural heritage places along the planned Barossa pipeline route. But the Tiwi people said the pipeline will cause significant damage to ancient burial grounds, aboriginal art and other sacred ancestral sites. Santos was informed about the concerns of the indigenous elders but the company had plans to begin the pipeline construction soon, the group said.

The Federal Reserve has made three big mistakes since inflation took off in 2021, according to UBS. "Today's rate hike will probably have to be reversed in a relatively short space of time," UBS said. Today's additional rate hike from the Fed gets to the root of what has went wrong. These are the three big mistakes made by the Fed over the past two years, and how it will impact the economy, according to UBS. "A sensible recognition of the declining quality of economic data would have stopped the blind hike, hike, hike strategy."

SYDNEY, May 6 (Reuters) - Australia will change its Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT) to increase the tax paid by the offshore LNG industry, moves that should increase revenue by A$2.4 billion ($1.6 billion) over the next four fiscal years, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said on Saturday. "Under the current rules, most LNG projects are not expected to pay any significant amounts of PRRT until the 2030s. The Treasury review of gas pricing was started under the previous conservative government. Chalmers said both reviews had found that aspects of the PRRT were better suited to oil projects than LNG projects, and the deductions cap and other changes would help address that. There is expected to be a substantial improvement in the budget position due to higher than expected commodity prices boosting revenues.
SYDNEY, April 26 (Reuters) - A group of Indigenous Australians on Wednesday filed a human rights complaint against 20 large Australian pension funds for investing in Santos Ltd's (STO.AX) two gas projects, putting pressure on the funds over their fossil fuel investment plans. Three traditional landowners, in the complaint filed directly with the superannuation funds, alleged the funds had an "obligation to prevent adverse human rights impacts of companies in which they are invested". Commonwealth Super Corp, AustralianSuper, Australian Retirement Trust, Aware Super and AMP - the five largest pension funds - did not immediately respond to requests seeking comment. An appeal by Santos to resume drilling on its A$3.6 billion Barossa gas project off northern Australia was rejected by the federal court in December after indigenous groups raised objections. Santos then said it would apply for fresh approvals for its biggest project in line with the court's order.

FLAT IRON ORE OUTPUTFortescue on Monday posted steady iron ore shipments in the March quarter, while costs jumped 12%, but retained its full year shipment guidance despite a cyclone this month that disrupted exports from Australia's iron ore hub. Shares in the world's fourth largest iron ore miner fell as much as 5.3%, underperforming a 2.2% drop in the broader mining sector (.AXMJ) amid a drop in iron ore prices to near four-month lows on demand concerns. It left its shipments guidance for the year to June 2023 unchanged at 187 Mt to 192 Mt. Fortescue said it aims to start mining at its Belinga Iron Ore project in Gabon in the second half of 2023.
The Fidelity Puritan Fund has dominated in the past five years under Dan Kelley. Here's how the portfolio manager finds underpriced growth stocks that are still high quality. Meanwhile, about half of the fund's bonds are US Treasuries, and just 11.5% are high-yield. How to find mispriced growth in marketsWhen looking for stocks, Kelley said his focus is on finding "mispriced growth" companies, which is similar to what many fund managers call "growth at a reasonable price," or GARP. That's the same mindset that's kept the Fidelity Puritan Fund going for nearly eight decades.
LAUNCESTON, Australia, March 27 (Reuters) - The Australian natural gas sector believes it has the solution to warnings of a shortfall in domestic supplies in coming years. But a recent report from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AMEO) warned the domestic market may have insufficient supplies from this year out to 2025. The second is that if the LNG producers are forced by legislation to satisfy the domestic market first, they risk undermining Australia's reputation in Asia as one of the most reliable suppliers of energy. There is also a time factor, with it likely to take far longer to explore, develop and build the infrastructure than is available to avoid shortfalls in the domestic market. The first is to risk Australia's reputation as an energy supplier and future investment by forcing the LNG producers to supply the domestic market and curtail exports.

Throw in dividends and Santos shareholders have received a measly 6% total return during that period. Santos’ 15% return on capital employed last year puts it at the bottom of the class; BP delivered almost 25%. It looks slated to stay in the basement, with analysts projecting a sub-8% return for 2025, per Refinitiv data. The bonus is mostly tied to successful “growth projects”, which arguably encourages him to overinvest. If that happens again at next month’s annual meeting, it would, under Australian rules, allow investors to boot the entire board.

Companies Santos Ltd FollowMELBOURNE, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Australia's Santos Ltd (STO.AX) faces yet another setback on plans to develop the A$3.6 billion ($2.5 billion) Narrabri gas project, after an Indigenous group filed an appeal to the Federal Court on a permit for the project. The long-delayed project is seen by the state government of New South Wales and energy authorities as essential to plugging a gas supply shortfall expected in the next two or three years. NTSCorp, representing the Gomeroi people, filed a notice of appeal to the Federal Court on Jan. 13, court records show. At full tilt, the Narrabri project could supply more than half of the gas needs in New South Wales, the country's most populous state, Santos has said. MELBOURNE, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Australia's parliament on Thursday passed legislation setting a price cap on natural gas for one year and providing A$1.5 billion ($1.03 billion) in relief for households and small businesses hit by soaring energy costs due to Russia's war in Ukraine. The price cap will apply to new wholesale gas sales by east coast producers. The law also clears the way for the government to regulate gas sales when producers and buyers fail to agree on a contract price. The price cap met with fierce opposition from the gas industry but was supported by manufacturers and the Australian Workers' Union. Mining billionaire Andrew Forrest's private firm Squadron Energy, building a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal, urged the government to require Queensland gas producers to make LNG available for the domestic market at "reasonable prices".
The move, detailed late Friday, comes as gas producers face fierce criticism over soaring energy prices that have resulted in windfall profits from their Australian operations. The government said it would cap gas prices at A$12 per gigajoule (GJ) and coal prices for power plants at A$125 per tonne for one year in what Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said were "extraordinary measures" to drive down energy bills. It would not apply to gas sales on the spot market, and would remain in place until the regulator advised the government that domestic gas prices were "reflective of the underlying costs of production". "This may be taken as a declaration of war on the gas industry on the east coast," Credit Suisse analyst Saul Kavonic said. The government earlier this year forecast household gas and power prices would rise by 20% to 30% over each of the next two years.
MELBOURNE, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Australia's Federal Court rejected on Friday an appeal by Santos Ltd (STO.AX) to resume drilling on its $3.6 billion Barossa gas project off northern Australia, dealing another setback to the company's biggest project. Justice Debra Mortimer said the court ordered that the appeal be dismissed, following an expedited two-day hearing in November stemming from a challenge against the drilling approval brought by some traditional owners from the Tiwi Islands. The court backed a challenge led by Tiwi Islander Dennis Tipakalippa, a member of the Munupi clan, overturning approval by the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) for drilling on Barossa. The Barossa gas field is 300 km (186 miles) north of Darwin, while the Tiwi Islands lie about 80 km north of Darwin. Tipakalippa said Santos had not properly consulted the traditional owners about the drilling and told the court that the Barossa project posed a risk to sacred sites and spiritual connection to Sea Country north of the Tiwi Islands.
But it is spreading across finance, energy, retail and aviation, threatening to push up labour costs in industries facing supply-chain bottlenecks and worker shortages. The turmoil is especially pronounced because union power was curtailed in Australia under laws in place since the 1990s. In the year to June, the average Australian wage rose 2.6%, compared with inflation of 6.1%, according to official data. Despite seven interest-rate hikes since May, inflation is set to climb further before subsiding in 2023, the government says. But in the current climate in Australia, workers are in no mood to back down.
The weaker near-term outlook came as Chief Executive Officer Kevin Gallagher outlined a new strategy, following nearly seven years at the helm during which he slashed costs and roughly doubled Santos' output through acquisitions. Asian buyers are looking to lock in gas supply for 10, 15 or 20 years, Vice President Jane Norman told analysts. The company's near-term production decline reflects the end of life at the Bayu Undan gas field off northwestern Australia and weaker gas production in Western Australia, but does not include its sell down of a 5% stake in PNG LNG, Santos said. Production in 2023 is expected to drop to between 91 mmboe and 98 mmboe, down from between 103 mmboe and 106 mmboe this year, the company said. Analysts' consensus for 2023 production was at 99 mmboe, according to Barrenjoey.
MELBOURNE, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Australia will not put curbs on gas exports after reaching a deal with its three east coast producers of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to avert a forecast supply crunch, Resources Minister Madeleine King said on Thursday. The pact unveiled on Thursday provides for Queensland Curtis LNG, run by Shell, Australia Pacific LNG, run by ConocoPhillips (COP.N), and Gladstone LNG, run by Santos (STO.AX), to offer an extra 157 petajoules of gas to the domestic market next year. The terms require the LNG exporters to offer uncontracted gas to the domestic market before international buyers and ensure domestic buyers will not pay more for uncontracted gas than customers offshore. This is because it is the only east coast exporter to take more gas out of the domestic market each year than it supplies. GLNG agreed to step up domestic supply during Australia's peak winter demand period, Santos said.

Nineteen minutes before the first 911 call alerted the authorities to a mass shooting, a hate-filled, anti-immigrant manife sto appeared online. The suspect told investigators soon after his arrest that after driving more than 10 hours from Allen to El Paso, he had become lost, and then drove to Walmart because he was hungry, according to court documents. He also told investigators that he had used an AK-47-style rifle and brought multiple magazines with him from Allen to carry out the killings. The police told her that, according to the law, her son was allowed to have the weapon , a lawyer for his family has said. A lawyer for Mr. Crusius could not be immediately reached for comment on Thursday.
