It's a "capital junkie" that's been on a yearslong binge of unprecedented spending on all-electric and autonomous vehicles. The April 2015 report highlighted the industry's massive capital spending on overlapping or niche products that Marchionne was convinced could be solved through consolidation and shared capital spending. Most capital spending by automakers isn't wasted, but the industry isn't as efficient as other sectors, with minimal return on invested capital. Reuters —Stellantis said on Tuesday it will deploy a new vehicle system that will support assembly of gasoline, hybrid and electric models, but in a sign of how turbulent the electric-vehicle transition is, the automaker also delayed production of Ram electric pickup trucks. Tavares said the automaker is delaying production of its electric Ram pickups until the first half of 2025 from this year, citing the need to ensure quality. The global industry faces even greater uncertainty around EV demand if U.S. President-elect Donald Trump carries out plans to unravel various incentives around EV production and sales. Battery electric vehicles on Frame will have up to 500 miles (805 km) of range, and it will offer a 14,000-pound (6,350-kg) towing capacity, the company said. It will also support hydrogen and extended-range electric vehicles.

DETROIT — Stellantis is delaying the launch of its Ram electric pickup trucks from this year until the first half of 2025, as the trans-Atlantic automaker continues testing the vehicles. CEO Carlos Tavares on Tuesday declined to disclose details about what caused the delays or specific timing on the electric trucks, which include an all-electric “REV” model and an extended-range “Ramcharger” that’s equipped with an electric generator and a gas engine. Stellantis’ upcoming electric pickups are the first that will be built on the company’s new “STLA Frame platform” for its larger trucks and Jeep SUVs. It is expected to be a “multi-energy platform” that’s capable of internal combustion engines and hybrids, as well as electric models using batteries, fuel cells and range-extended electric propulsion systems. Doing so would deliver on Trump’s campaign comments about removing such incentives and EV initiatives.

Jeff Kowalsky | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesDETROIT — General Motors is proving it's a standout among automakers this year as it continues to consistently outperform Wall Street's earnings expectations and its competitors. For the most part, GM stock has traded in lockstep with Ford due to their histories and the cyclical nature of the automotive industry. Ford stock is off 10% as of Friday's close. Others, including Ferrari , which has been among Wall Street's top auto performers, are also trailing GM. Shares of GM under Barra, who started leading the automaker in January 2014, have been lackluster for investors for most of her tenure.

Detroit Reuters —Chrysler parent Stellantis confirmed on Thursday that CEO Carlos Tavares would retire at the end of his contract in early 2026 and announced major senior management changes as it struggles to turn around its lagging North American operations. The world’s fourth-largest automaker by sales said it now planned to name his successor by the fourth quarter of 2025. The automaker also appointed Antonio Filosa as its North America chief operating officer in addition to his role as Jeep brand CEO, succeeding Carlos Zarlenga, whose future role has not been announced. Stellantis last week lowered its forecast from positive cash flow to negative cash flow of between 5 billion and 10 billion euros ($5.5 billion and $10.9 billion) this year. The broad management shakeup was meant to address these concerns, Tavares said in a statement Thursday.

Stellantis said it would reduce inventory levels in the United States and ship 200,000 fewer vehicles to North American dealers in the second half of 2024 than in the same period last year. Volkswagen said earlier this month that around 2 million fewer cars are being sold in Europe per year compared with pre-pandemic levels. We will continue to work with our dealers to avoid any public disputes that will delay our ability to deliver results." London CNN —Foreign automakers have dominated China’s car market for decades, selling millions of vehicles and raking in enormous profits. Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) are also among firms seeing sales and market share vanish in China as local consumers spurn overseas brands to buy Chinese instead. Last year, BYD sold a record 3.02 million vehicles globally, including plug-in hybrids, up 62% from 2022. A Tesla short-seller named two auto stocks that he believes have the potential to deliver 100% upside for investors. Lekander, who holds a short position in Tesla shares, has said the EV carmaker could "go bust" while its stock could fall to $14. His comments came after Tesla reported 386,810 vehicle deliveries in the first quarter, significantly below the lowest market estimates . Valuing AI in auto Lekander also dismissed the notion that Tesla's self-driving software justifies its high valuation, noting that the product is still in early research and development. In 2023, Tesla sold around 230,000 more cars than BYD. That drop was big enough for Tesla, which sold 386,810 BEVs in the same period, to retake its former position despite posting plunging sales. Both Tesla and BYD are expanding beyond their home markets and investing in factories abroad. BYD sold about 3 million electric cars, including hybrids, in 2023 globally. By comparison, Tesla, which does not sell hybrids, delivered a total of 1.8 million vehicles worldwide last year, which was about 19% of the global market for BEVs.
