A European humanitarian aid group said on Thursday that about 50 migrants died after their small boat deflated during an attempt to cross the central Mediterranean Sea. A ship belonging to the charity, SOS Mediterranee, spotted the deflating rubber dinghy on Wednesday, in international waters under the Libyan rescue jurisdiction. The survivors told the charity that they had been adrift for four days, since the engine on their dinghy broke. Some 50 other people were with them when they departed from the Libyan port of Zawiya, they told the rescuers, including two infants and four women. Valeria Taurino, the director general of SOS Mediterranee, said the situation on board was “disastrous.”

Italia a autorizat acostarea în Sicilia a navei Ocean Viking, ce aparţine organizaţiei umanitare SOS Méditerranée, pentru a debarca 572 de migranţi, a anunţat ONG-ul joi seara, potrivit AFP, citat de agerpres.ro. SOS Méditerranée lansase miercuri un apel către Uniunea Europeană pentru "găsirea unui port sigur şi debarcarea migranţilor primiţi la bordul Ocean Viking, cât mai rapid posibil". La 1 mai, nava Ocean Viking a adus în Sicilia alţi 236 de migranţi salvaţi pe mare. Recent, ONU a cerut Uniunii Europene şi Libiei să-şi reformeze procedurile de căutare şi salvare a migranţilor pe mare astfel încât să fie respectate drepturile şi demnitatea acestora. Din februarie 2016 până în prezent, organizaţia SOS Méditerranée a salvat peste 30.000 de persoane, cu ajutorul navelor Aquarius şi Ocean Viking.
