Not exactly what you want to see if you're an investor putting new money to work within Tech," he wrote. The SMH closed Friday at $252.96, and the strategist expects the $233 level to be tested near term. That bullish consensus makes this former CBOT pit trader take pause, and I believe now is the time to hedge some semiconductor exposure. I want to use put options in the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) to mitigate downside risk. That came in the wake of better-than-expected results from contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor , which counts NVDA as one of its biggest customers. Lastly, I want to consider the technicals setup, as when emotion gets injected into the marketplace, technical typically take over. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

Chip stocks could return to their bull market highs and beyond, and be the key trade of the fourth quarter, according to Evercore ISI. In fact, Rich Ross, head of technical analysis at the firm, expects there is 20% more upside to semiconductor stocks as represented by the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) into year-end. Similarly, the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) climbed more than 18% this year, about in line with the S & P 500. Wall Street analysts are still skeptical on Intel despite its latest moves aimed at righting the ship. Shares of Intel gained more than 3% on Tuesday after the chipmaker said it would turn its foundry business into an independent unit — allowing it to raise outside capital . The analyst added that Intel's plan to establish its foundry business as an independent subsidiary was "expected and not good." "We expect Intel's EPS to be under pressure given its foundry business, which we believe has minimal chance of succeeding," he wrote. Intel shares have lagged the broader semiconductor sector year to date, losing 56% in that time.

While we are getting a tech rally Wednesday thanks to Advanced Micro Devices (up 7%), this is the month when rotation became more than a one day event. Since small-cap companies often have more debt and higher borrowing costs, the expectation of lower rates is certainly a factor. I noted weeks ago that more fundamentally inclined investors were worried about the slower rate of earnings growth for big cap technology stocks . The Russell 2000 would also benefit any time a rotation out of tech occurs because the weightings are different. While the two sectors that comprise technology in the S & P 500 (Technology and Communication Services) are about 40% of the S & P 500, the Russell 2000 is much more diverse.
