The company published a list of the most mispronounced words of the year in the United States and the United Kingdom on Wednesday, including foreign words that have entered the English lexicon for one reason or another, as well as the names of various politicians and public figures. US Vice President Kamala Harris is one prominent entry, with her first name the source of plenty of confusion. “His name is pronounced (key-OH-gin), with a clear “g,” unlike many Irish variations where the “g” would be silent,” said Babbel. If you’re discussing potential purchases, or reports that the company plans to list on the London Stock Exchange, remember that the name should be pronounced (SHE-in) rather than (SHEEN). The Swedish language also contributes two words on the UK list: smokeless tobacco Snus, pronounced (SNOOZ), and flygskam, the name of a movement that aims to discourage people from flying that should be pronounced (FLEEG-skam).

Absurd and comical rescue images that appear to have been made with artificial intelligence have sprung up on social media this week as Hurricane Milton hit Florida, a reaction to the earlier proliferation of more realistic fake images related to Hurricane Helene. But as technology has advanced, fake images generated by AI have continued to proliferate on the internet, at times making it easier for false information to spread online. Public officials even cautioned Floridians this week to beware of AI-generated images that falsely depict conditions on the ground. The inspiration for the hurricane rescue images meme format apparently stems from a viral post from a public official on X, who shared a fake image of a child crying while holding a puppy with a flooded backdrop amid Hurricane Helene, which some recirculated as if it were real. In one meme image posted by an X user, former President Donald Trump appears to be dropping a basket of puppies over a body of water.

A California baseball stadium featured in the Hollywood blockbuster “A League of Their Own” was destroyed by a fire late Thursday, officials said. The Jay Littleton Ballpark, in Ontario, California, went up in flames about 11:30 p.m. and is a “a total loss,” city spokesperson Dan Bell said. “If you look up and down the street, you have baseball lovers everywhere,” Ontario Eastern League president Aaron Matthiesen told NBC Los Angeles, adding that some were in tears. “This ballpark has been the heart of Ontario, the historic ballpark, the place to play for our kids. “I have two young kids in our league, and the dream has always been that they get to play at Jay Littleton,” he said.
