This article is part of “Dealing the Dead,” a series investigating the use of unclaimed bodies for medical research. State regulators have ordered a Texas medical school to immediately halt its practice of liquefying bodies after using them for training and research. The University of North Texas Health Science Center said in 2020 that it would renovate a Fort Worth anatomy facility, including installing two alkaline hydrolysis units. The University of North Texas Health and Science Center stopped using unclaimed bodies following NBC News' reporting. Dallas and Tarrant county officials did not immediately respond to questions about whether they agreed to allow the Health Science Center to liquefy unclaimed bodies.

A massive battery recycling plant is being built in Germany by Cylib, a startup looking to reduce waste from EV batteries that have reached the end of their life. Cylib says its facility will be the largest end-to-end lithium-ion battery recycling facility in Europe. Cylib said the new plant would primarily serve automotive, battery manufacturing and chemicals clients. “Cylib reaching industrial scale production will be a key driver in building a robust European battery infrastructure,” Schwich said in a press statement. “Battery recycling is pioneering the circular economy, proving that economic success is compatible with reduced environmental impact,” she added.

It’s ironic, because Johannesburg, South Africa’s biggest city, has plenty of water at the moment — authorities and water companies just can’t seem to get it to where it’s needed. South Africa is naturally dry, and the climate crisis has hit the nation many times with crippling drought. “But there have been multiple times where we’ve been without water for five, seven days,” he said. Ravin Singh founded the Water Crisis Committee civic group last September, after his neighborhood northeast of downtown Johannesburg was suddenly hit with prolonged outages. Now Joburgers also talk about “water shedding.”But Singh concedes that people could be doing more to lower water consumption, voluntarily.

“Our findings revealed how the Amazon forest system could enter a phase of self-reinforced collapse sooner than previously thought.”Previous studies had not predicted a collapse of this scale could happen in the 21st century. “The Amazon forest is a major pump of moisture into the atmosphere, contributing to circulation processes that transfer moisture across the globe,” Flores said. Douglas Magno/AFP/Getty ImagesThe authors of the study noted that water stress was a common factor in the disturbances to the Amazon. Water stress occurs when there is not enough water to meet human or ecological needs. Global warming is intensifying the effects of water stress by causing the Amazonian climate to become drier and warmer.

Staff at the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge on Maui have been monitoring the pink water since Oct. 30. The salinity inside the Kealia Pond outlet area is currently greater than 70 parts per thousand, which is twice the salinity of seawater. Las Vegas is trying to balance economic growth and water conservation. The producer plans to move to northern Las Vegas and requested $2.28 million in tax incentives from the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development. The water-investment tool works like this: First, the Southern Nevada Water Authority analyzes how much consumptive water a new or expanding company would use. Johnson said the next steps include making sure officials in every city in greater Las Vegas are using the tool in the same way. CNN —There is a crisis brewing in the olive oil industry. The situation is all the more concerning as it comes on the heels of a bad olive harvest last year, following Europe’s hottest summer on record. In Spain, the world’s biggest olive oil producer, production plunged to roughly 620,000 metric tons, compared to the five-year average of around 1.3 million metric tons, said Holland. This summer, heat gripped swaths of the Mediterranean region, bringing a “heat hell” scientists say would have been virtually impossible without climate change. “It’s getting to the stage where the concerns are significant not just for olive oil but for a lot of crops,” Holland said.

CNN —An “unprecedented drought” is affecting the Panama Canal’s water supply and leading authorities to impose surcharges and weight limits on ships traversing the key global trade route, according to the Panama Canal Authority. Ships move through the Panama Canal through a lock system, which uses water from several freshwater reservoirs to float the massive cargo vessels overland. But Panama is currently gripped by drought, and water levels at least one of those reservoirs – Gatun Lake – are dropping. But the start of El Niño “could worsen” conditions, the Panama Canal authority also warned. Regional neighbors have sought opportunities to compete with the lucrative Panama Canal.

CNN —Thunderstorms can bring dangerous lightning, heavy rain, strong winds and sometimes ice stones falling from the sky – known, of course, as hail. Hail forms when warming at the Earth’s surface causes water to evaporate and rise, eventually reaching freezing temperatures higher in the atmosphere. Hail formation can be broken into two types: wet growth or dry growth, according to the National Weather Service. The new formations then fall and freeze together relatively slowly, which can give hail interesting shapes depending on how the pieces combine. Since freezing isn’t immediate during wet growth, air bubbles can escape, which makes these hailstones partially clear.

If the energy used to power the plants is renewable, it is called green hydrogen. Singh said the Indian G20 presidency had put forward a draft definition that he considered reasonable and held discussions with various countries. "If the world wants to decarbonise, the world must agree on a definition of green hydrogen. Across the world, countries are turning to green hydrogen as a solution to climate-related energy problems. India in January said it had approved an incentive plan of 174.9 billion rupees ($2.11 billion) to promote green hydrogen to cut emissions and try to become a major exporter in the field.

For the month of February, the Ariege region, where Lake Montbel is located, has suffered from a rainfall shortage of 80%. Lake Montbel is an artificial lake, which extends over 570 hectares and was created in 1985 by flooding what used to be a forested area. "Lake Montbel, in fact, is the guarantee of income ... For the first time in almost seven years, a new nuclear reactor has started up in the United States. On Monday, Georgia Power announced that the Vogtle nuclear reactor unit 3 has started a nuclear reaction inside the reactor. It's when the nuclear fission process starts splitting atoms and generating heat, Georgia Power said in a written announcement. However, because nuclear energy is generated without releasing carbon dioxide emissions, which cause global warming, the current increased sense of urgency in responding to climate change has given nuclear energy a chance at a renaissance. The cost associated with building nuclear reactors is a major barrier to a potential resurgence in nuclear energy, however.

The bill took cues from Washington state, where lawmakers in 2019 became the first in the U.S. to legalize human composting and where a nascent industry is growing. Four Washington state funeral facilities are now licensed to perform natural organic reduction, according to Rob Goff, the executive director of the Washington State Funeral Directors Association. California’s law will give regulators with the state’s Cemetery and Funeral Bureau until 2027 to create regulations for a human composting program. The know-how behind human composting began in ranchers’ fields. Human composting could instead help soils sequester carbon and provide nutrients for plant life.
